Life can be incredibly beautiful, but it can also be heartbreakingly cruel. Its unpredictability is part of what makes it such a profound journey.
Brianna Rawlings was just 18 years old, 17 weeks pregnant, and excited to become a mother when her world was turned upside down. She was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer known as NK cell leukemia. Prior to this, her symptoms had been dismissed as typical pregnancy-related issues.
Nearly halfway through her pregnancy, Brianna faced an unimaginable choice: begin life-saving treatment by terminating her pregnancy, or continue carrying her baby and delay treatment in hopes of giving him a chance at life.
She chose to continue her pregnancy, putting her focus on bringing her son into the world. Tragically, her sacrifice led to devastating consequences for both of them.
Her baby boy, Kyden, was born prematurely and lived for only 12 days. In that short time, he was surrounded by immense love, but his fragile condition proved too much to overcome. Due to a serious blood infection Brianna had developed, doctors performed an emergency C-section to reduce the risk to the baby.
Reflecting on those precious moments, Brianna shared in an interview that the days she spent holding her son, counting his tiny fingers and toes, and speaking to him were the most meaningful of her life. Despite the pain of losing him, she said he gave her the strength to keep fighting.
Determined to overcome her illness, Brianna pushed herself physically as her condition briefly showed signs of improvement. However, her health soon worsened again, forcing doctors to cancel a planned bone marrow transplant from her brother.
As a last effort, she began an experimental treatment that cost thousands of dollars each week. Her family managed to raise the funds, allowing her to undergo two rounds of the therapy, but sadly, it was not enough.
Brianna Rawlings passed away on December 29, 2018, at the age of 19. Her story remains a powerful testament to the depth of a mother’s love and the strength she showed in the face of unimaginable hardship.
