Some stories are deeply upsetting, and this is one of them. A 10-year-old boy has tragically lost his life under heartbreaking circumstances.

Dakota Levi Stevens had been living in a foster home for only about a month when the incident occurred. His foster mother, 48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson, was later charged in connection with his death in Berrien County, Michigan.

Reports indicate that earlier that day, Dakota had left the house and was later found at a neighbor’s home. After returning, he became upset and began acting out. During the situation, his foster mother restrained him in a way that had serious consequences.

According to authorities, she applied her body weight to hold him down for several minutes while speaking on the phone with a caseworker. She later told police she believed he was pretending to be unresponsive.

When she realized something was wrong, emergency services were called. Dakota was taken to the hospital and placed on life support, but he passed away two days later, on April 25, 2024.

Medical findings later confirmed that he had suffered severe internal injuries, and his death was ruled a result of mechanical asphyxia.

The case drew widespread attention and concern. It was also reported that shortly before the incident, Dakota had gone to a neighbor’s house and asked to stay there.

Jennifer Lee Wilson later pleaded guilty to reckless homicide. In January 2025, she was sentenced to six years in prison, with part of the sentence to be served on probation.

Dakota had only recently been placed in the home by child services. Following the incident, other children living there were removed.

He was remembered as a child who loved being outdoors and had a unique, spirited personality.

While nothing can undo this loss, it highlights the importance of ensuring that children in foster care are safe, supported, and protected.

Rest in peace, Dakota.
