You can have whatever opinion you like about Ashton Kutcher as a performer, but beyond Hollywood he has shown remarkable dedication and compassion. In recent years, Kutcher has devoted himself to fighting human trafficking, and reports suggest his efforts have helped identify and protect thousands of vulnerable children.

According to People, Kutcher and his former wife Demi Moore co-founded Thorn in 2012. The nonprofit was created to use technology to identify victims of child sex trafficking and assist law enforcement in rescuing them.

What started as a vision to give a voice to exploited children has grown into a powerful organization making measurable progress against trafficking. In 2017, Thorn reported that it had identified nearly 6,000 child victims and helped rescue over 100 children from situations where abuse material was being produced and shared. The organization has also contributed to identifying thousands of suspected perpetrators.

Thorn develops technological tools designed to help authorities track and combat online child exploitation. Today, the nonprofit employs full-time teams and contractors across more than 20 states, all focused on protecting children from predators.

In an interview with 48 Hours, Kutcher explained that Thorn’s mission is centered on building tools that allow many people to save lives, rather than relying on isolated acts of heroism.

In 2017, Kutcher also addressed Congress, urging lawmakers to take stronger action to safeguard vulnerable women and children. He spoke about the fundamental right to pursue happiness and emphasized that trafficking strips that right away through force, fraud, and coercion.

Despite the praise he has received, Kutcher has also faced criticism from online detractors who suggest he should focus solely on acting. His response has been firm: he has seen firsthand the devastating realities of exploitation and feels a responsibility to act. He has described working closely with law enforcement agencies, including the United States Department of Homeland Security, when urgent cases required technological support.

Kutcher has made it clear that this work is not separate from his life’s purpose — it is central to it. Through Thorn, he continues to advocate for stronger protections, accountability for offenders, and a safer world for children.
