Some auditions surprise you. Others make you nervous. But Alex Magala’s appearance on Britain’s Got Talent went far beyond either — pushing into territory so dangerous that few performers would ever attempt it. What began as a tense audition quickly became one of the most frightening moments ever aired on the show, and years later, people still remember it.
In 2016, the Moldovan stunt performer walked onto the BGT stage with an act that felt more like a life-or-death challenge than a performance. Without hesitation, Magala swallowed a long steel sword, letting it slide completely down his throat. The audience froze. Yet that shocking moment was only the setup. He then climbed a tall vertical pole, the sword still inside him, as the atmosphere in the theatre grew almost unbearable.
What followed left everyone stunned. Magala threw himself headfirst into a violent “death drop,” speeding down the pole and stopping just inches above the stage. The sword remained perfectly in place. A single mistake could have ended in disaster. Even the experienced judges found it hard to watch, flinching as the stunt played out before them.
Simon Cowell was visibly shaken. Afterward, he confessed, “I actually thought you were going to die,” calling the audition one of the scariest and most memorable in the show’s history. Other judges looked away, unsure whether they were witnessing incredible courage or sheer recklessness.
And the risk didn’t stop with the audition. Due to serious safety concerns, producers later ruled that Magala’s semi-final and final performances could not be done live and had to be pre-recorded. Still, he received four yeses and made it all the way to the final — cementing his reputation as the most dangerous contestant Britain’s Got Talent has ever had.
