New information has surfaced about Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis last week, revealing that he was previously involved in a violent incident that left him seriously injured.
Ross, who was captured on video shooting Good three times at close range as she attempted to run from officers on January 7, was publicly identified after widespread pressure following the incident. Court records confirming his role in the shooting also describe a prior encounter in June 2025 in Bloomington, Minnesota, in which Ross was badly hurt.
According to reports cited by the New York Post, Ross was part of an ICE team attempting to detain Roberto Carlos Munoz, a man facing multiple criminal charges. When Munoz refused to exit his vehicle, the situation escalated. Ross reportedly shattered the rear driver-side window to unlock the door, but Munoz suddenly accelerated in an attempt to flee.
Ross’s arm became trapped between the car seat and the vehicle frame as Munoz drove off, allegedly dragging the agent more than 100 yards while swerving in an effort to dislodge him. The Justice Department stated that Ross suffered serious injuries to his arm and hand, requiring 33 stitches, according to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
Munoz was later apprehended and charged with assaulting a federal officer, and a federal jury convicted him in December 2024.
Ross, a full-time Minneapolis-based member of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Special Response Team, is now at the center of another high-profile case following the killing of 37-year-old mother Renee Good.
After the shooting, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem publicly supported Ross, saying his actions were justified. Former President Donald Trump also weighed in, stating that Ross was fortunate to survive and placing blame on Good.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly condemned ICE’s presence in the city, telling the agency to leave Minneapolis and accusing it of fostering disorder and mistrust rather than public safety. Addressing claims that the shooting was an act of self-defense, Frey said that after watching the video himself, he rejected that explanation outright.
