Erika Kirk has been increasingly outspoken since the death of her husband, Charlie Kirk, earlier this year. Following his passing, she stepped into the role of CEO and has continued to lead his organization, Turning Point USA.

Recently, however, remarks she made during a public appearance have generated significant discussion online. During a speech at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest event in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, December 20, Erika made a verbal mistake that quickly spread across social media.

While speaking about her late husband’s legacy, the 37-year-old widow accidentally said the word “grift” instead of “grit.” The slip immediately drew attention, with one user on X commenting, “This is the greatest Freudian slip of all time.”

Erika assumed leadership of the organization after Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September. The moment occurred during a ceremony honoring a student named Caleb Chilcutt, who was present when Charlie was fatally shot. Chilcutt was standing beside Erika as he received the Charlie Kirk Courage Award.

Charlie Kirk was killed at an event held at Utah Valley University, where Chilcutt was a student. Chilcutt later helped organize a memorial for Kirk on campus.

As Erika misspoke, she quickly tried to recover, saying, “Despite the devastating loss of Charlie Kirk, my incredible husband… Caleb has persisted with the same grift,” before immediately correcting herself to “gift,” and then finally, “grit.”

After realizing the mistake, she placed a hand on her chest, sighed, and leaned forward on the podium. Addressing the audience, she explained, “It has been a long day.” She then turned to Chilcutt and added reassuringly, “Trust me, you’re not a grifter, honey. It’s all good.”

Despite the lighthearted recovery, the clip went viral.

“Greatest Freudian slip of all time followed by shameless grin of all time,” one commenter wrote.

“Sooner or later the truth slips out!” said another.

The incident took place during Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest, held from December 18 to 21, and quickly became the most widely shared moment of the event.
