Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were discovered dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, prompting police to open a homicide investigation. Beyond his legendary career in film, Reiner was widely known for his deep involvement in politics. Only months before his passing, he openly expressed his strong opinions about former President Donald Trump.

The acclaimed director and actor, along with his wife, were found at their residence in the Brentwood neighborhood. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that detectives are treating the case as an apparent homicide. In a statement released through a family representative, loved ones described the loss as devastating and asked the public to respect their privacy during this painful time.

Reiner rose to fame as one of Hollywood’s most respected filmmakers, directing classics such as The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap, and When Harry Met Sally. His work on A Few Good Men earned him an Academy Award nomination in 1993, cementing his legacy in the film industry.

Outside of entertainment, Reiner was highly active in political and social causes. According to the LA Times, he went far beyond the typical celebrity role in politics, becoming a dedicated Democratic activist. He was particularly passionate about early childhood education and marriage equality, co-founding the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which played a key role in overturning California’s Proposition 8.

Reiner’s political beliefs strongly clashed with those of Donald Trump. Friends and colleagues noted that he took politics seriously, investing time in understanding policy rather than simply lending his name to causes. Democratic strategist Ace Smith described Reiner as someone who successfully bridged the worlds of entertainment and politics with substance and commitment.

Over the years, Reiner openly criticized Trump, questioning his fitness to lead the country. In 2017, he told Variety that he believed Trump was mentally unqualified to be president and lacked both knowledge of and interest in how government functions.

Reiner continued voicing his concerns in later years. While promoting the documentary God and Country, which he produced with his wife, he criticized Trump’s association with Christian values, calling him unrepresentative of genuine faith. Reiner also publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election and reiterated his stance in 2024, arguing that an aging leader was preferable to what he described as a dishonest and criminal alternative.
