She has a presence that draws people in instantly, with a smile bright enough to carry her all the way to Hollywood fame.
But behind that shine is a childhood few would imagine. Growing up in Los Angeles, her life was anything but glamorous.
She was raised by her mother, Maureen — a single mom who worked as a stripper to make ends meet — and things became so difficult at one point that they lived in a storage unit because they couldn’t afford an apartment.
Named “Sexiest Woman Alive” in 2011
Everyone deals with obstacles, but the actress we’re spotlighting today started life with more than her fair share of them.
Yet now, she has shelves of awards, and she’s even been crowned “Sexiest Woman Alive.”
Born in California in 1980, she came from a brief relationship between her mom and former Aerosmith guitarist Rick Dufay. She spent most of her childhood with her mother and her mom’s sometimes-boyfriend, David Gonzalez.
Even at age seven, she understood her world wasn’t like other kids’. Growing up with a single mother who danced in clubs meant money was always scarce. At one point, they were forced to live in a shed simply to have a roof over their heads.
“I spent a lot of my youth wishing my mom was something she wasn’t,” she once admitted. “I only appreciated how unique she was after I grew up. Maybe a little too late.”
Her early years were filled with instability and unpredictability. She often accompanied her mother to Crazy Girls, a well-known topless bar famous for its rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere — even Motley Crüe filmed their “Girls, Girls, Girls” video there.
“When she had a good night, we’d go grocery shopping at 2 a.m.,” the actress recalled in an interview with People after publishing her memoir.
“My childhood was colorful and chaotic… unstable, inconsistent, unpredictable, and often very hard. But the upside is that it made me incredibly adaptable,” she explained.
Her mother once attempted to smuggle drugs across the U.S.–Mexico border. She was caught and jailed, leaving her daughter to bounce between friends’ homes. In one of those places, she even experienced physical abuse.
By her teenage years, she was essentially on her own — and began performing in peep shows at an adult video store in Albuquerque.
“I started with the scariest part,” she said. “The part I carried the most shame about… the part I had hidden all my life. I felt I needed to be brave right there.”
Dreamed of becoming a nurse
She eventually walked away from a damaging first relationship — one that involved manipulation and an abortion — and tried to reconnect with her estranged father.
She originally trained to become a scrub nurse, but ultimately moved to Los Angeles to chase modeling and acting.
Her major breakthrough came with the TV series Friday Night Lights, where she played Lyla Garrity, a cheerleader in a small Texas town. The role earned her critical acclaim.
“I was living out of a suitcase in my friend’s apartment when I got the call telling me I’d be moving to Austin,” she shared on Instagram. “I phoned the surgery center where I worked as a scrub nurse and told them I’d be quitting for some football show in Texas — but I’d be back when it ended.”
“I had no idea I’d just hit the jackpot, and that the show would last five years.”
Although Friday Night Lights never became a massive mainstream sensation, it gained a devoted fanbase and widespread praise for its authentic storytelling.
She took her role seriously and even trained with a real Texas high school cheer squad to prepare.
And yes — the actress is Minka Kelly.
Today, at 45, she’s an established Hollywood figure with roles in films like The Roommate and The Butler. The Roommate, despite mixed reviews, made over $15.6 million in its opening weekend and exceeded $40 million worldwide.
In 2013, she portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in The Butler, which was a major box office success, earning more than $177 million globally.
While she might not be in the absolute A-list category with stars like Jennifer Lawrence or Scarlett Johansson, she is respected for her range, skill, and longevity in the industry.
Her most recent major role is in Ransom Canyon, a romantic western series on Netflix based on books by Jodi Thomas.
Beyond acting, Kelly has dedicated herself to supporting women, particularly after her mother died in 2008. She advocates for regular breast cancer screenings and collaborates with ABLE, a company creating sustainable jobs for vulnerable women in Africa, including former sex workers.
Her mother died of colon cancer
Her charitable work is heavily influenced by her relationship with her mother. Although they had long-standing financial conflicts and drifted apart, they reconnected when Maureen was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. In the face of her mother’s declining health, Kelly chose forgiveness.
“I learned that the only way to fill the hole in my heart was to serve others — and I wanted to help women,” she said.
She held her mother as she passed away in hospice, a painful but life-changing moment. She carries regrets — such as missing her mother’s last Thanksgiving — but writing her memoir Tell Me Everything helped her heal.
“It felt freeing to own my story instead of feeling like I needed to hide it,” she said.
The book was widely praised and quickly became a bestseller. It offers a raw look at the upbringing that shaped her — and serves as a tribute to her mother and to all struggling single mothers. Publishers Weekly called it “an immensely moving story of one woman’s unconquerable spirit.”
In the memoir, Kelly also shares the story of her first serious relationship. Her boyfriend was emotionally abusive — calling her a “slut” over her clothing choices and pressuring her to engage in sexual acts with a female friend. When she refused, he slept with the friend in front of her.
The next day, she learned she was pregnant.
When her mother returned, they went to Planned Parenthood. Kelly wrestled with the decision to terminate the pregnancy. Her mother suggested raising the baby together, but Kelly knew their unstable situation wouldn’t allow it. She ultimately chose to have an abortion.
Since then, Kelly has been linked to several high-profile partners.
During Friday Night Lights, she dated co-star Taylor Kitsch. Their “toxic” relationship affected her time on set, she revealed in her memoir.
She later dated Chris Evans, and she and New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter were together from 2008 to 2011. She also dated Trevor Noah and briefly Jesse Williams, whom she met while working on Detroit: Become Human.
Since 2022, she has been in a relationship with Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons.
Outside of acting and her personal life, Kelly has a deep love for cooking and baking — she even graduated from the New School of Cooking in Culver City in 2015 and has talked about wanting to host a traveling cooking show.
