Young celebrities in Hollywood often appear to live perfect lives — fame, fortune, and adoration seem to come effortlessly. That’s why it’s always surprising when a beloved teen star chooses to step away from it all.

Today’s story follows that familiar path. A young actor, adored by millions of fans worldwide, eventually realized that there was more to life than the entertainment industry.

Kirk Cameron first became known as a child actor on Growing Pains, and soon rose to become one of the most recognizable faces of the 1980s. Teen magazines couldn’t get enough of him, but behind the scenes he was struggling with the pressures that came with early fame.

Ironically, Cameron never planned on becoming an actor at all — he dreamed of becoming a surgeon. But his life took a different turn when, at the suggestion of a friend, his mother introduced him to acting. His sister, Candace Cameron Bure, also entered show business, ultimately becoming a household name through Full House.

The friend who encouraged Cameron’s mother happened to be the mother of Adam Rich, a fellow child star from Eight Is Enough. After this suggestion, Cameron began booking small roles, including a McDonald’s commercial. Even though he didn’t particularly enjoy acting, he kept getting offers.

He later admitted, “I hated having to brush my hair and tuck in my shirt just to drive an hour in traffic for auditions.” Still, his big break came when he landed the role of Mike Seaver on Growing Pains, which catapulted him to stardom.

Despite his success, Cameron began to question whether Hollywood was the right place for him. That’s when something unexpected changed his life: faith.

Growing up, his family wasn’t religious. “We never went to church,” he said. He even considered himself an atheist as a teenager. His skepticism, he explained, came from influential teachers who dismissed religion as nothing more than fantasy.

A turning point came when he met a girl he liked who invited him to church. He admitted his initial motivation wasn’t spiritual—it was simply to spend time with her. But that visit shifted something inside him, and soon his newfound faith became noticeable to colleagues.

Producers of Growing Pains worried about how his changing beliefs would influence the show. Cameron remembers their concerns: “They wondered if I was getting into something extreme, and whether they needed to intervene.”

He said he genuinely wanted to live by stronger moral principles, though he believes some people misunderstood his intentions. As his priorities evolved, so did his feelings about Hollywood. He later reflected on what he called “the darkness and corruption” present in the industry.

His concerns were validated when his dialogue coach, Brian Peck, was later exposed in a documentary for abusing young actors.

To Cameron, Hollywood seemed increasingly driven by ego and power — something he no longer wanted to be a part of. His faith became his anchor. “When fame becomes your god instead of the God who gave His life on the cross, you’re headed for trouble,” he said.

At age 20, Cameron married his Growing Pains co-star Chelsea Noble. He stepped back from Hollywood and focused on family life. Together, they have six children, four of whom are adopted — something deeply important to both of them, especially since Noble herself was adopted. They always remained open with their children about their origins and supported them in reconnecting with their biological families.

In 2021, Cameron announced his plans to leave California altogether. He asked followers for relocation suggestions, and the most popular responses were Tennessee, Texas, and Florida. Cameron felt California had become unsafe and no longer reflected the values he wanted for his family.

He ultimately chose Tennessee, partly because three of his children lived there. He appreciated its slower pace, strong sense of community, and what he described as a “freedom mindset” he felt was lacking in California. He also noted that Tennessee has become a center for faith-based creative projects.

In 2024, living close to family proved especially meaningful when he became a grandfather. He joyfully announced the arrival of his granddaughter, Maya Jeanne Noble Bower, writing that his family’s hearts were “overflowing.”

Though his life has taken a gentler turn, Cameron hasn’t stopped working. In 2022, he released Lifemark, a film centered on adoption and the value of life — a story that resonates deeply with him due to his family’s own experiences.
