Back in 1997, a couple from Iowa, USA — Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey — made world history when they welcomed the first surviving set of septuplets. Born nine weeks premature, their arrival made global headlines and turned the family into overnight celebrities.

Media outlets rushed to feature them, and not long after, the McCaugheys appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to celebrate the babies’ first birthday — each little one with their own cake. They even met former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The septuplets — Kenny Jr., Alexis, Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, Brandon, and Joel — joined their big sister Mikayla, making the McCaughey household a very lively one. In those early days, caring for the babies was a monumental task: they went through around 52 diapers and 42 bottles every single day!

Thankfully, generous donations poured in — including a large family home, a van, two years’ worth of diapers, endless boxes of macaroni and cheese, and college scholarships to Iowa’s state universities. Still, their parents worked hard to manage the expenses, even starting their own vegetable garden to help feed their growing family.

Two of the septuplets, Alexis and Nathan, were diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Nathan underwent back surgery in 2005 and, with determination, learned to walk without a walker. Both went on to achieve amazing things despite the challenges.

After graduating high school, all seven siblings pursued higher education. Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, and Joel attended Hannibal-LaGrange University in Missouri on scholarships, while Kenny and Alexis studied at Des Moines Area Community College. Brandon chose a different path and joined the U.S. Army.

College life was a turning point for the septuplets — their first real experience of independence. “Growing up, we did everything together,” said Kelsey. “But college gave us the chance to discover who we are individually and follow our own dreams.”

Today, each sibling has found their own path. Natalie, who married in 2019, hopes to attend graduate school to become an athletic trainer. Alexis, who studied early childhood education, dreams of working with kids and has even won several beauty pageants for people with special needs.

Nathan and Joel both studied computer information systems — Joel aims to work for Google one day, while Nathan loves building computers. Kelsey majored in public relations and hopes for a career in media.

Their older sister Mikayla married in 2015, making the septuplets aunts and uncles for the first time. Brandon also tied the knot in 2019, just months after Natalie’s wedding.

More than two decades later, these once tiny miracle babies have grown into confident young adults — each following their own dreams but still sharing a special bond.

“We’re not just the seven septuplets anymore,” Kelsey said. “We’re our own people. But we’ll always be best friends.”

Truly, these seven miracles have shown the world what love, perseverance, and family can achieve.
