For those still unsettled by Jaws, this real-life shark encounter is truly nightmarish.

In a tragic incident off the coast of New South Wales, Australia, an experienced swimmer is believed to have been killed and consumed by a 13-foot shark during a routine swim—without anyone immediately noticing.

The event occurred on April 3, 2014, when 63-year-old Christine Armstrong set out with her regular swim group from Tathra Wharf to Tathra Beach, a familiar 600-metre route.

A longtime member of the Tathra Surf Club, Christine was celebrated for her strength and skill in the water. On that day, however, she reportedly told her group she wasn’t feeling well and decided to turn back alone after swimming about 200 metres, according to The Mirror.

Moments later, other swimmers noticed a fin in the water. Birds were circling and diving above the surface—a warning sign of a predator nearby. The group quickly returned to shore, assuming Christine had already made it back safely. Tragically, she had not.

The next day, Christine’s goggles, swim cap, and some remains were discovered washed ashore. Her body was never recovered, leading authorities to conclude she had been instantly consumed by a large shark, likely a great white, though the species was never definitively confirmed.

Her husband, Rob Armstrong, who was swimming nearby at the time, told reporters: “The shark was so large, and it consumed her almost completely. She wouldn’t have even known what happened.”

The Tathra Surf Club, where Christine and Rob had been members for 14 years, paid tribute to her afterward: “She was an experienced and dedicated member. Swimming brought her joy and many friends.”

Though the attack occurred more than a decade ago, Christine’s story continues to resonate online. A resurfaced YouTube video recounting the tragedy has reignited both public fascination and sorrow, with viewers expressing horror and sympathy alike.

Shark attacks in Australia remain rare but profoundly traumatic, especially when they claim a life. Christine Armstrong’s story is a sobering reminder of the ocean’s unpredictability—and of the courage shown by those who face it every day.
