A heartbreaking video is going viral, showing the emotional moment when 18-year-old Kimber Mills, a high school cheerleader from Alabama, was wheeled past fellow students and community members as she was taken into surgery to become an organ donor.
Kimber was one of four victims shot at a party near Palmerdale, Alabama, on October 18. Tragically, she was declared brain-dead and removed from life support on October 21. Before her passing, she was given an “honor walk” through the hospital at the University of Alabama, where students and local residents lined the halls to pay their respects.
A senior at Cleveland High School, Kimber had been active in cheerleading and track, and was planning to attend the University of Alabama next year to pursue a career in nursing. She had been caught in the crossfire during the shooting, which was sparked by a dispute between the shooter, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, and others at the party. Whitehead allegedly tried to approach a girl who wasn’t interested, leading to a physical altercation before he opened fire.
Kimber’s family, after being informed her injuries were too severe, decided to honor her wish to be an organ donor. Her sister, Ashley Mills, shared that Kimber’s heart was given to a 7-year-old boy in Ohio, and her lungs went to a woman in New York.
Another shooting victim, 21-year-old Silas McCay, who was shot 10 times, managed to walk behind Kimber as she was wheeled toward surgery. His brother, Shane, described the scene as emotional, with the entire hallway in tears as Kimber’s loved ones bid her farewell.
Kimber’s community is mourning the loss of a young woman who had such a bright future ahead.
Hundreds of Alabama high school students filled the hospital halls, tearfully lining up to say their final goodbye to 18-year-old Kimber Mills — who was shot at a party over the weekend and is now heading into surgery to become an organ donor.
