Charles Higgins II, oggi studente di terza media, era un timido alunno di terza elementare quando partecipò nervosamente a un concorso di talenti. Nel 2018 eseguì la hit Sugar dei Maroon 5, ma fu nel 2022 che riuscì davvero a stupire sua madre. Durante un’esibizione corale di This Is Me da The Greatest Showman, Charles fece un assolo che lasciò tutti senza parole. Ciò che era iniziato con incertezza si trasformò in una performance angelica e sorprendente, cogliendo di sorpresa il pubblico.
Anche se la qualità audio non era perfetta e Charles aveva un leggero accento, le frasi che cantò con chiarezza furono: «When the sharpest words wanna cut me down; I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown ’em out; This is brave, this is bruised; This is who I’m meant to be, this is me.» Persino gli altri interpreti, come la donna barbuta, si unirono con sicurezza, sottolineando la forza del momento.
Charles iniziò piano, ma acquisì gradualmente sicurezza e concluse con grande forza. Il video originale, registrato quando aveva 13 anni, è stato aggiornato da sua madre con filmati più recenti.
