The grief of losing a child is described by father Shivy Brooks as “immeasurable and endless,” yet alongside the pain, he carries deep pride for his 16-year-old son Bryce, who gave his life to save four children from drowning.

In April 2023, while on a family trip to Pensacola, Florida, Bryce noticed a group of younger kids being dragged under by powerful rip currents. Without a moment’s hesitation, the Atlanta teen leapt into action.

“They weren’t kids he even knew,” his father explained at a press conference. “Our son Bryce, while fighting the current himself, was yelling for help — not for himself, but for the children he was trying to protect.”

Pulled under

As he struggled to keep the children safe, Bryce was overcome by the strong waters in an unguarded section of the beach. That day, yellow flags warned of moderate rip currents.

Bryce and close family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II were airlifted to nearby hospitals. Shivy shared a plea on Instagram during the frantic drive:

“My oldest son Bryce needs our prayers…he went to save another child and was pulled under. Our dear friend went in after him and was also caught. Both have been flown to Pensacola hospitals.”

But the next morning, tragedy was confirmed. Bryce had suffered cardiac arrest and passed away.

“I never thought I’d wake up to ‘RIP’ posts with my child’s picture,” Shivy wrote. Posting a photo of his son, he simply added: “Our baby.”

Remembering a hero

Though devastated, Bryce’s parents have spoken of their pride.

“The level of selflessness it takes to give up your life for others — and at only 16 years old — we couldn’t be prouder,” his father said. “Let the world know Atlanta raised kids willing to sacrifice everything for strangers.”

His mother, Crystal, echoed: “It doesn’t ease the pain, but I’m proud of my son and what he did. I’ll carry that forever.”

Family friend Johnson, who also lost his life that day, was remembered as a devoted husband and father of three. “That he would try to save Bryce doesn’t surprise me,” Shivy said. “That’s exactly who he was — always looking out for others.”

Keeping Bryce’s light alive

In the months after his death, the Brooks family launched the Bryce Brooks Foundation, dedicated to drowning prevention and water safety. The nonprofit funds free swim lessons for children and adults and provides scholarships to teens for lifeguard training.

Already, six scholarships have been awarded to help with college costs — including one for Johnson’s son.

On social media, Shivy continues to share his grief and love:

“Bryce’s presence is missed more than words can say. He was always my hero, the one who made the impossible seem possible. I just want to talk to him again, hug him again. I just want my boy to come home.”

Bryce Brooks’ life was far too short, but his bravery — and the lives he saved — ensure his legacy will endure.
