Charles Higgins II, now a ninth grader, was once a shy third grader who nervously entered a talent contest. Back in 2018, he performed Maroon 5’s hit “Sugar,” but it was in 2022 that he truly amazed his mother. During a group performance of This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, Charles delivered a solo that left everyone stunned. What began as a timid, wobbly start soon blossomed into a breathtakingly angelic performance, catching the audience completely by surprise.
Although the audio quality isn’t perfect and Charles carries a slight accent, the lines he sings with remarkable clarity are: “When the sharpest words wanna cut me down; I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown ’em out; This is brave, this is bruised; This is who I’m meant to be, this is me.” Even the performers around him, like the bearded lady, join in confidently, underscoring the power of the moment.
Charles starts quietly but gradually gains strength and finishes with a confident, forceful delivery. The original video, filmed when he was 13, has now been updated by his mother with recent footage. At 15, Charles’s voice has matured into a lower, richer tone. His latest solo, REO Speedwagon’s Can’t Fight This Feeling, is just as impressive.
Though he still begins with a touch of shyness, Charles’s performances only get stronger as his confidence and voice improve. There’s no doubt this talented young man has a bright future ahead—perhaps even a spot on The Voice or America’s Got Talent.
