NHS Surgeon Jailed in Bizarre Fraud and Pornography Case
An astonishing case has left the public stunned: NHS vascular surgeon Neil Hopper has been sentenced to 32 months in prison after admitting to fraud and possession of extreme pornography.
The 49-year-old doctor pleaded guilty to defrauding two insurance companies of nearly £467,000 (around $620,000). He falsely claimed compensation for the amputation of his legs, saying the procedure followed a septic infection. In truth, the injuries were self-inflicted and tied to his sexual interests.
Investigators also uncovered that Hopper had been in possession of disturbing pornographic material depicting genital mutilation, linked to videos published on a website called EunuchMaker, operated by Marius Gustavson. Gustavson himself was sentenced to at least 22 years in prison for performing and streaming castrations and mutilations online for both sexual and financial purposes.
According to the court, Hopper deliberately inflicted harm on himself “for sexual gratification.” He was admitted to hospital with sepsis symptoms, and after extensive treatment, surgeons amputated his legs in May 2019. He later submitted false insurance claims to Aviva and Old Mutual Wealth, pocketing nearly half a million pounds.
Judge remarks during sentencing highlighted how Hopper manipulated doctors: “You represented your injuries as organic, caused by sepsis, when in reality, you inflicted them yourself.”
Prosecutor Nicholas Lee added that Hopper’s actions stemmed from “a long-standing obsession with removing parts of his own body and a sexual interest in doing so.”
Before his own amputations, Hopper had performed hundreds of similar procedures as part of his NHS career. Shockingly, he returned to work less than six months after losing his legs. However, his suspension came in December 2023, and his arrest followed in March 2023.
Authorities discovered his involvement after probing Gustavson’s activities, finding that Hopper had exchanged more than 1,500 messages with him, including discussions about how his amputations should be carried out.
