A father of four lost his life after being buried by a collapsing sand dune while digging at the beach.
According to reports, 28-year-old Kane Watson was at Muriwai Beach near Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday, August 23, with his 18-month-old daughter and three stepsons when the tragedy occurred.
The New Zealand Herald states that Watson, who was expecting another child, had been playing in the sand when a dune suddenly gave way, trapping him headfirst. He reportedly cried out for help but remained buried for about 15 minutes while his children ran to get assistance.
Rescue teams eventually freed him and transported him to Auckland City Hospital, where he passed away the next day, Sunday, August 24.
University of Auckland lecturer Colin Whittaker told RNZ that this devastating incident highlights the hidden dangers of sand dunes:
“If a large dune collapses, the weight is enormous — potentially as heavy as an elephant. That can cause severe injury and makes it nearly impossible to dig yourself out, especially if you’re struggling to breathe. Even rescuers face challenges, as any hole dug quickly fills back in.”
A fundraising page set up by family friend Kristalle Tayler described Watson as a “beloved son, brother, partner, and above all, a devoted father,” emphasizing his excitement for the baby on the way.
“His greatest joy was being with his children — not only his own but also those he cared for as his own. Family was everything to him,” Tayler wrote. “Most heartbreakingly, his youngest child, due early next year, will never meet him but will grow up hearing stories of the incredible man who loved them before birth. The suddenness of this accident has shattered Kane’s family.”
Watson’s sister Shaquille shared her grief with local media, calling him her “best friend” and “favorite person.” Tayler added:
“He was an amazing dad. That’s what makes this so heartbreaking. All he ever wanted was to have a family — and just when he had it, it was taken from him.”
