Viggo Mortensen has long fascinated audiences with his intense performances, rugged appeal, and fearless choice of roles. But away from the screen, there’s another side to the Hollywood icon that’s drawn public curiosity.

For years, Mortensen has been seen sharing affectionate kisses with a certain man — Canadian director David Cronenberg — sparking speculation and questions about their relationship. Now, the actor is addressing the rumors directly, and his answer is as intriguing as it is candid.

The 66-year-old, best known for his Oscar-nominated performances and his legendary turn as Aragorn in *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy, has led an unconventional life from the start. Born in New York to a Danish father and American mother, he spent his early years in Venezuela, Denmark, and Argentina before returning to the U.S. at 11. Acting wasn’t his original plan — after college, he took odd jobs in Denmark, from truck driving to selling flowers — before finally moving back to the States in 1982 to pursue acting.

His Hollywood debut was rocky: his first film role in *The Purple Rose of Cairo* (1985) was cut entirely. But Mortensen persisted, building a steady career and breaking through with *G.I. Jane* (1997). While the film underperformed, his performance was praised, paving the way for his most iconic role — Aragorn. Stepping in at the last minute to replace another actor, Mortensen brought unmatched dedication, performing most of his own stunts and even breaking toes during filming.

Off-screen, one of the most significant relationships of his life began in 2001 when he met Cronenberg at Cannes. They hit it off immediately and vowed to work together — a promise fulfilled with *A History of Violence* (2005). The collaboration was a hit, cementing both their professional and personal bond. Their friendship became known for its public displays of affection, including a lingering kiss at a 2006 press event and another at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards, where Mortensen honored Cronenberg with a Lifetime Achievement Award and used his speech to criticize Hollywood for overlooking the director’s talent.

Their creative partnership continued with *Eastern Promises* (2007), *A Dangerous Method* (2011), and *Falling* (2020) — the last of which Mortensen wrote, directed, and starred in. In *Falling*, Mortensen plays a gay man caring for his homophobic father, prompting questions about whether it was appropriate for a “straight” actor to take on such a role. His response was direct:

“How do you know what my life is? You’re assuming I’m completely straight. Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. And it’s frankly none of your business.”

For Mortensen, connection matters more than labels, and his bond with Cronenberg remains one of Hollywood’s most unique — equal parts respect, affection, and creative synergy.

In his personal life, Mortensen was married to singer Exene Cervenka from 1987 to 1997, with whom he shares a son, Henry. Since 2009, he has been in a relationship with Spanish actress Ariadna Gil.

Cronenberg, now 81, was married twice — first to Margaret Hindson, with whom he has a daughter, and later to Carolyn Zeifman, who passed away in 2017.

For Mortensen, love and loyalty defy boundaries — and his decades-long connection with Cronenberg is proof that some bonds are simply beyond definition.
