A 12-year-old Georgia boy suffered severe burns after a sleepover prank went horribly wrong when his own friends allegedly poured scalding water on his face while he slept.

Trey West was spending New Year’s Day at his neighbor’s apartment in Tifton with three boys, aged 12 to 15. While Trey was sleeping, the others were playing video games — until one of them allegedly dumped boiling water on him, tearing the skin from his face. His mother, Tiffany West, described the moment as shocking, infuriating, and heartbreaking. The “prank” left Trey with second-degree burns requiring urgent medical care.

Trey was rushed to a burn center in Augusta where he underwent surgery. Doctors expect a 12–14-day recovery, though he may face lasting physical and emotional scars. “You’ve got to be in shock to know your friends are capable of this,” said his aunt, Nachelle Austile, adding that Trey has been emotionally numb since the incident.

Police arrested the three boys involved, but they were later released to their families pending court hearings next month.

The local community has rallied behind Trey, offering donations and messages of support. In emotional Facebook posts, his mother thanked everyone for their kindness, calling her son a “warrior” and praising God that things weren’t worse. She later updated that Trey was healing well, sleeping in his own bed again, and might return to school soon.

Perhaps the most uplifting moment came when West shared a video of Trey smiling and dancing with his baby sister, captioned: “He’s healing beautifully! Nobody but God.”

This incident highlights the devastating consequences of reckless pranks and the need to teach young people empathy, accountability, and the seriousness of their actions.
