The causes of death of English soccer player George Baldock, who was discovered dead in his swimming pool at the age of 31, have been disclosed. Baldock was 33 years old.

On Wednesday, July 23, an inquest was held at the Milton Keynes Coroners Court in England. The cause of death of the athlete was determined to be drowning for the purpose of the investigation. A conclusion was reached by the coroner that the manner of death was accidental.

On October 9, 2024, the body of Baldock, who had been born in the United Kingdom but also claimed Greek nationality, was discovered in the swimming pool of his residence in Athens, also in Greece.

“A post mortem examination confirmed that there were no drugs or alcohol in his system and that he had a very large heart that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrhythmias,” according to a transcript of the inquest obtained by PEOPLE.

In addition, the letter said that the efforts made to revive Baldock after he was discovered were futile. On October 22, 2024, an investigation into his death was initiated, and on April 10, 2025, an inquest is scheduled to take place.

Heart arrhythmias are defined as irregular heart beats that are brought on by “the electrical signals that tell the heart to beat not working properly,” as stated by the Mayo Clinic. Both too rapid and too slow of a heartbeat are possible. There is also the possibility that the rhythm of the heartbeat is irregular.

The soccer player could not be brought back to life despite the fact that the cops attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

There was no proof of any kind of foul play uncovered by the authorities, and the original suggestion made by the local coroner was that Baldock had drowned to death.

“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate, and person,” his family stated in a statement at the time, as reported by Sky News and the BBC. Their words were included in the statement. “Those who had the good fortune to know you and those who adored you from the stands were filled with so much love because of your infectious personality and the enthusiasm that you brought to whatever you did.”

The message closed with the following: “We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son.”
