Malcolm-Jamal Warner, an actor who achieved widespread recognition for his portrayal of Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has passed away.

According to the authorities in Costa Rica, Warner, who was 54 years old, passed away by drowning over the weekend while on vacation there.

According to the Judicial Investigation Agency of Costa Rica, he was swimming at Playa Grande approximately 14:00 (20:00 GMT) local time on Sunday in the town of Cocles, which is located in the province of Limón. It seems that he was swept out to sea by a rapid ocean current.

On the immensely successful American comedy that aired from 1984 to 1992, Warner portrayed the role of Bill Cosby’s son. Celebrities like as Questlove, Jennifer Hudson, Taraji P. Henson, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Magic Johnson were among those who quickly voiced their condolences and paid tribute to the deceased.

According to the authorities, onlookers rescued Warner and carried him to shore. The Costa Rican Red Cross attempted to treat him, but he was pronounced dead at the site of the incident.

He leaves behind his wife and children after his death.

As a result of his performance on The Cosby Show in 1986, Warner was considered for an Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

He was chosen by Bill Cosby for his breakthrough role on the very last day of an audition that took place throughout the country.

“I was literally the last person they saw,” he recounted in an interview that took place in the year 2023.

Between 1985 and 1990, The Cosby Show was the most popular television program for a total of five seasons. The show depicted a kind and welcoming family from the middle class, which was a very uncommon portrayal of black Americans on television at the time.

“When the show first came out, there were white people and black people talking about [how] the Huxtables don’t really exist, black people don’t really live like that,” Warner said in an interview that took place in 2013.

“Meanwhile, we were getting tens of thousands of fan letters from people saying, ‘Thank you so much for this show.'”

Following his time on The Cosby Show, Warner had guest appearances on a number of different television programs, one of which being Malcom & Eddie, in which he co-starred with comic Eddie Griffin.

Posting “R.I.P. King” and “My big little brother” on his social media accounts following his passing, Griffin expressed his condolences to his family and friends.

Sesame Street and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air both featured Warner as a guest star on their respective shows. More recently, he has been seen in the role of AJ Austin, a cardio-thoracic surgeon, in the television series The Resident, which is a medical drama.

A statement was sent to the American website Variety by Fox Entertainment, the company that was responsible for broadcasting the program. “Everyone at Fox is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague, the extraordinary Malcolm-Jamal Warner,” the statement said.

“While his iconic roles – from comedic to dramatic – are unforgettable and timeless, Malcolm will be remembered most for his warmth, kind heart and the lasting impact he had on his friends, family and fans everywhere.”

“You were a part of our childhood.”
Moreover, Warner was awarded a Grammy in the category of Best Traditional R&B Performance in the year 2015, together with Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway, for their rendition of the song Jesus Children of America, which was originally performed by Stevie Wonder.

In the year 2023, he was the recipient of yet another Grammy nomination for his album of spoken word, titled Hiding In Plain View.

It was in the previous year that he launched a podcast called “Not All Hood,” which focused on the topic of mental health in the black community.

It has been reported that former co-stars and admirers have started writing tributes to him on the internet.

Magic Johnson, a basketball player who was included in a film that Warner produced to raise awareness about AIDS, claimed that he and his wife were “both super fans of the hit Cosby Show and continued to follow his career” during the course of their relationship.

Malcolm and I would have profound and enjoyable chats about basketball, life, and business whenever we came into contact with one other. “He will be sorely missed,” Johnson stated in his letter.

“Wow. ” The comedic actor Kevin Hart remarked on his Instagram account that “this is heartbreaking,” while another celebrity, Jamie Foxx, adding, “I am speechless on this one.” I pray that you find peace, my brother.

He was referred to as “a gentleman” and “an incredible talent” by the actress Jennifer Love Hewitt.

In a message, actress Vivica A. Fox expressed her shock and sadness at the news of his unexpected passing, adding, “Thanks for ya gifts, king.”

Tracee Ellis Ross, who had a collaboration with Warner on the television show Reed Between the Lines, expressed her sorrow by stating, “My heart is so so sad.”

“What a wonderful friend and actor you were: you were affectionate, compassionate, present, kind, insightful, profound, hilarious, and stylish. You brought more joy and happiness into the earth.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I am truly sorry for this loss that is beyond comprehension.

According to a tweet made by actress Taraji P. Henson, “Malcolm, we grew up with you.” Thank you for the grace, the art, and the knowledge that you have bestowed upon us!!!!

You have left the world in a better state than you found it in. Relax, you are the king!!!! The legacy you leave behind extends well beyond the screen.

In a recent tweet, actress Niecy Nash said that she had just spoken with Warner.

When we were talking, we both expressed how content we were with our marriages. I’m sorry, my buddy. On The Cosby Show, you were an essential component.

Every single one of us adored Theo! Forever etched in our memories. You are going to be missed. “Take it Easy.”

In addition, Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock lauded Warner, stating in a post, “For me and so many in my generation, Malcolm-Jamal Warner was a part of our childhood, a brother whose character ‘Theo’ felt like one of my own.” Warnock said that Warner was a part of his youth.

“May God grant peace to his soul, strength and grace to his grieving family.”
