When Morris Chestnut thinks back on Malcolm-Jamal Warner, he remembers him as a kind and sincere force, both on and off the screen.

As Chestnut reflects on the influence that Warner had on his life even before the two of them worked together on The Resident, he does so in an exclusive Interview with People magazine.

“I used to look at The Cosby Show when I was young and I used to see myself in him,” Chestnut explains to me. “You know, and his character, Theo.”

Beginning in 1984 and continuing until 1992, Warner started his career as an actor by portraying the role of Theo Huxtable, the only son of Heathcliff Huxtable, the character played by Bill Cosby on The Cosby Show. After that, he went on to appear with Chestnut on four seasons of The Resident, which was shown on Fox.

“[Malcolm] was without a doubt one of the most charitable individuals in the business world that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. “When I came onto The Resident, the entire cast welcomed me with open arms,” Chestnut reveals to PEOPLE from the set of his CBS television drama, Watson, which is now being filmed in Vancouver, Canada. They are in the process of filming the second season of the show.

I was asked out to supper by him in particular, and after I had been there for a bit, he really extended the invitation to me. So, we went out to dinner, and he was just a very, really lovely person who was really honest. He was always very, very professional and quite upbeat. He was always really optimistic. It was just a pleasant sensation for him to be in his presence.

Chestnut says that Warner “definitely left a positive image” with his renowned role of Theo throughout his career.

“In particular at that time period, a young individual who was progressive, strong, and optimistic. What Chestnut has to say about it is that “back then it was kind of like it was, you know, a lot of it was the gang genre.” “Back then, it was the start of the gang genre.”

It is important to note that he has been on The Cosby Show. Each and every person tuned in to see the play, and his persona was upbeat and entertaining. He was the focal point of the Gordon Gartrell shirt in a number of the episodes that I consider to be among mine. It is something that I will never, ever forget where I was while I was seeing some of his productions.

Consequently, the legacy that he is going to leave behind for the people who watch the program is unquestionably going to be a good one. “I believe that the influence that he leaves on people who have known him extends substantially further than that,” he adds.

On Sunday, July 20, Warner passed away as a result of drowning when he and his family were on vacation in Costa Rica. The age of the man was 54.

Although witnesses were able to save the actor, he was “declared lifeless” at the scene, according to the police in Costa Rica, who verified this information to PEOPLE.

According to a statement that was acquired by PEOPLE, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) said that “the victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current.” A group of spectators came to the man’s aid and brought him to the beach, where he was sent to the Costa Rican Red Cross for medical care. Despite this, he was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.

Following the news of the actor’s loss, Chestnut also paid respect to him by posting a message on Instagram, which read as follows: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner.” The opportunity to collaborate with him on The Resident was a privilege. In each and every scene and interaction, he provided an incredible amount of sophistication, kindness, and insight. It is among the most pleasant in the industry. Brother, you may relax now. We will carry on your legacy.”
