An accident that occurred when a coach that was transporting students back from an end-of-term school excursion turned onto its roof and fell down a bank resulted in the loss of one kid and the severe injury of two others.

The accident that occurred at Cutcombe Hill, close to Wheddon Cross, in Somerset at around 15:00 British Summer Time (BST) was classified a significant incident by the Avon and Somerset Police.

There were around seventy persons on board the coach, the most of them were students from Minehead Middle School. A total of twenty-one passengers were sent to the hospital.

CH Supt Mark Edgington said, “The events that have transpired today are truly tragic.” It is our firm belief that this information will leave the community in total disarray.

On X, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his sorrow on the latest information of the school bus accident that occurred in Somerset. It is impossible to find the appropriate words to express sorrow at the loss of a child.

The parents, family members, and friends of those impacted, as well as everyone else, are in my thoughts and prayers. I am being kept informed about the current situation, and I would want to express my gratitude to the emergency personnel who are acting quickly.

The bus flipped onto its roof and rolled around 20 feet (6 meters) down an embankment at Wheddon Cross, according to the information provided to journalists during a news conference that was held jointly by the police, the fire service, and the ambulance service. The firemen had to struggle to release scores of people who were trapped within the coach.

A total of more than twenty ambulances and three air ambulances were sent to the location of the incident.

As stated by Wayne Darch, the deputy director of operations for South West Ambulance Service, “It is with great regret that I report that one child was pronounced loss at the scene.”

According to the authorities, a significant number of passengers either received minor injuries or were physically unhurt and were sent to a rehabilitation center.

With the assistance of an off-duty fireman who was traveling behind the bus, the passengers were able to get assistance before the arrival of the emergency services.

“Extremely challenging events and circumstances”
According to Gavin Ellis, who is a member of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, “Our crews carried out a number of extrications and rescues in extremely difficult circumstances, and they also supported our ambulance colleagues with casualty treatment.”

There will be an inquiry into the reason of the collision, according to the announcement made by the Avon and Somerset Police Department, and they have requested that witnesses come forward.

“Our entire school community is devastated by this news, and we will do everything we can to support everyone affected,” said a spokesman for Beacon Education, which is the organization that the school is a part of.

“We are working closely with the emergency services and relevant authorities, and we will support our pupils, staff, and families at this incredibly difficult time,” according to their statement.

The director of the coach business Ridlers, Peter Prior-Sankey, has verified that their seventy-seater vehicle was involved in the accident that occurred on Thursday.

“We have since been liaising with both the school, and the emergency services, while we try to understand the extent of the incident,” he said to reporters.

Not only do our thoughts and prayers go out to the students at the school, but also to our driver. To have a better understanding of what has transpired, we shall be doing everything in our power.

Additionally, the operator acknowledged that the bus was returning from Exmoor Zoo the previous day.

The event was characterized as “horrendous” by a local citizen who lives in close proximity to the collision location.

“The coach has gone down the slope,” they said in an interview with the BBC. The terrain surrounding here is rather steep, and the bus is quite large.

You won’t find any obstructions or anything else along the path. You don’t even notice it since we’ve been used to it.

During a statement, the local member of parliament Rachel Gilmour remarked, “It’s absolutely unbelievable. As you are waving your children off on a school excursion at the end of the term, this terrible thing takes place.

It has been around six weeks since I went to Minehead Middle School. Children who are eager and self-assured attend our wonderful school that is filled with love and kindness. Without a doubt, I am certain that our community will come together.
