It’s a message that can’t be repeated enough: never use your phone while driving.

Yet, it’s a mistake many of us have made at some point—I’ll admit, I’ve done it myself in the past, and it’s something I deeply regret.

But after learning about the tragic story of 17-year-old Katelyn Ray, I’ve made a firm decision to always keep my phone out of reach when I’m behind the wheel. Using your phone while driving doesn’t just put you in danger—it puts everyone around you at risk.

Katelyn’s story unfolded early on the morning of September 5, 2018. She was on her way to pick up her older sister from work…

Shortly after, Mississippi police received a call reporting a severe traffic accident. What they discovered at the scene would stay with them forever.

Seventeen-year-old Katelyn Ray hadn’t noticed that a school bus ahead of her had slowed down on the highway. Tragically, she crashed into the rear of the bus at full speed—without ever hitting the brakes.

There were over a dozen children on the bus that morning. Thankfully, none of them were physically harmed, and they were later transported to school by another vehicle. Sadly, the outcome for Katelyn was far more tragic.

At the crash site, one of the first responders took a photo to help raise awareness. Katelyn had died on impact. When police examined the wreckage, they discovered her phone was still in her hand.

Investigators now believe she was looking at her phone instead of watching the road, which is why she didn’t notice the slowing bus in front of her.

The police later shared a powerful post on Facebook:

**“PAY ATTENTION!!**
The driver was 17 years old. There were no skid marks because she never hit the brakes. She still had her phone in her hand when we pulled her from the vehicle.”

Katelyn’s mother, Shelia, had asked her to pick up her older sister that morning—the last conversation she would ever have with her daughter.

When Katelyn didn’t arrive at her sister Courtney’s workplace by 7 a.m., the family initially thought she was running late. By 7:30 a.m., Courtney became worried and posted on Facebook asking if anyone had seen her sister. Not long after, the family received the heartbreaking news.

The loss of a young life is always tragic, but it feels even more devastating when it stems from a preventable accident.

Our hearts go out to Katelyn’s loved ones. While nothing can bring her back, we hope her story serves as a powerful reminder: never use your phone while driving. One glance can change everything.
