For many people, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a beloved holiday classic, with Jim Carrey’s unforgettable performance defining the film. However, few are aware of the deeply moving and tragically timed story behind Josh Ryan Evans, the actor who portrayed the young Grinch in the 2000 adaptation.
Born on January 10, 1982, Evans had a rare form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, which limited his height to just three feet two inches. Along with his condition, he faced ongoing heart problems that led to multiple surgeries throughout his early years.
During his recoveries, Evans found comfort in movies and TV shows, sparking a love for acting that would later become his profession.
He began appearing in commercials at age 12 and made his film debut as a baby in Baby Geniuses (1999). But his breakout role came shortly after, when he was cast as the young Grinch. Though the part initially seemed minor, director Ron Howard expanded it after meeting Evans, inspired by the actor’s enthusiasm and emotional depth. The demanding makeup process took over five hours per day, but Evans embraced it fully and left a lasting impression on the cast and crew.
Howard later said, “Evans generated a lot of heart for the story.”
After The Grinch, Evans secured his most prominent role as Timmy Lenox, a living doll, on the NBC soap opera Passions. His performance made the character a fan favorite, earning him the YoungStar Award from The Hollywood Reporter. NBC praised him as “a truly unique talent with a remarkable spirit.”
But just as his star was rising, tragedy struck. On August 5, 2002, Evans passed away at the age of 20 due to complications from his heart condition during surgery.
In a haunting twist of fate, the same day his real-life death occurred, Passions aired an episode in which his character Timmy also died. The episode, filmed weeks earlier, was meant to lead to Timmy’s return as an angel. After Evans’ death, those plans were dropped, and the episode was dedicated to him.
His co-star Juliet Mills, who played Tabitha, shared, “What he loved most was showbiz. It was almost poetic that he left the world the same day his character did. He made a big impact on his way out.”
Despite the health obstacles he faced, Josh Ryan Evans pursued his dreams with passion and left a memorable legacy. Each year when The Grinch is played during the holidays, audiences unknowingly honor the young actor whose brief presence on screen continues to touch hearts.
