An early morning walk in northwest Harris County turned terrifying when two loose pit bulls suddenly lunged at an elderly man, knocking him to the ground. Surveillance video captured the brutal mauling as the victim tried to fend them off, even using a box cutter. Neighbors heroically rushed in, with one startling the dogs away and a retired deputy shooting one through the shoulder to stop the attack

The man, believed to be around 67, was critically injured—bitten on his arms, legs, face, and neck—and suffered heavy blood loss, requiring a Life Flight transfer to a Level 1 trauma center after emergency responders administered blood and performed emergency treatment on-site

Both dogs were captured and quarantined; one deputy and an animal control officer were also bitten during the rescue effort. Local authorities are investigating, and the dogs’ owner may face felony charges for repeated dangerous behavior, as neighbors say the same animals previously attacked a dog and had escaped multiple times

It was a harrowing incident—but thanks to quick thinking from bystanders and first responders, the man has a fighting chance at recovery.
