In the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, Andrew Cuomo has declared his intention to accept defeat to Zohran Mamdani.
According to statements made by the former governor, who is 67 years old, on Wednesday, June 25, he said that he could not see any way to win the election and pronounced Mamdani, who is 33 years old and a Democratic Socialist and New York state assemblyman, the winner.
It is not strictly true that Mamdani has won the contest just yet since the tabulation will have to go through more rounds of ranked-choice voting on July 1 in order to help him cross the 50% barrier. However, the dominating lead that Mamdani has established has made it abundantly evident that Cuomo will have a difficult time making a comeback.
Despite the fact that he was once polling at barely 1%, Mamdani was able to gather momentum in the closing weeks of the election by exploiting the power of social media to rally young progressives and by making use of his campaign trips to meet New Yorkers where they were.
Before the day of the election, there was only one significant survey that projected that Mamdani would beat the dynastic Democrat. All of the other polls seemed to favor Cuomo, who had been considered the front-runner for a considerable amount of time even before he officially joined the campaign.
After the results were announced, Cuomo reportedly told the press, “Tonight was not our night.” NBC News reported that Cuomo made this statement. “Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night, and he put together a great campaign, and he touched young people and inspired them and moved them and got them to come out and vote, and he really ran a highly impactful campaign.”
I made a phone call to him. He was congratulated by me,” Cuomo continued.
According to The Associated Press, Mamdani had more than 430,000 backers and 43.5% of the vote by the time Wednesday morning rolled around. This was after almost all of the votes had been tallied. After Cuomo, who had 36.4% of the vote, came in dead last. Having received 11.3% of the vote, Brad Lander was able to earn the third-place position.

During his speech to his supporters, Mamdani expressed his satisfaction with his performance in the contest. In addition to this, he presented a plan for his tenure in office, which he would implement if he were to be elected mayor.
“The mayor will use their power to reject Donald Trump’s fascism, to stop masked ICE agents from deporting our mayor, and to govern our city as a model for the Democratic Party, a party where we fight for working people with no apology,” according to him, according to NBC.
In spite of the fact that Cuomo has surrendered the Democratic primary, he has already said that he intends to compete for mayor in the general election that will take place in November while representing his own political party, regardless of whether or not he has the backing of the Democratic Party.
Mamdani will face incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who was elected as a Democrat but is now running as an independent, as well as Republican contender Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo’s potential return to the contest is not the only opponent Mamdani will face; he will also face incumbent Republicans.
“I hope now that this primary has come to an end, I can introduce myself once more, not as you’ve seen me in a 30-second ad or in a mailer in your mailbox, but as I how I will lead as your mayor,” Mamdani said to his audience of enthusiastic fans.
Cuomo presented his candidacy for governor of New York in March, four years after he resigned from his post as governor of New York in the midst of a number of controversies.
