11:07 a.m. Pacific Time — Both Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, have fully recovered from their surgeries and are now in stable condition. According to CNN, a bullet came dangerously close to hitting the senator’s heart, but his wife did not have any of her organs penetrated.
A member of the family claims that Yvette rescued her daughter by throwing herself on top of her and saving her life. During the time of the shooting, their daughter Hope, who is in her mid-20s, was at home spending time with her parents.
In what law enforcement officials describe as “targeted” shootings that took place early on Saturday morning, two Democratic state senators from Minnesota were shot, with one of them being killed in the politically controversial act.
State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were both fatally shot at their house in Brooklyn Park, according to the announcement made by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during a news conference. Yvette Hoffman, the wife of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman, and John Hoffman himself were both shot many times at their home in Champlin, yet they both managed to live. They were sent to the emergency room for surgery, and they are now recuperating.
In his statement, Walz referred to the incident as “targeted political violence.”
The police were able to make contact with the suspect at the residence of the Hortmans, where they exchanged shots until the suspect fled on foot.
The assailant was dressed as a law enforcement officer and arrived at the Hortman house in a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was designed to seem like a squad car. He was also wearing a vest that contained a taser and a badge that looked plausible.
Even though the police have detained and questioned a number of people, they have not yet taken anybody into custody, and the investigation is still continuing. It has been requested that thousands of individuals in the Brooklyn Park neighborhood remain in their current locations.
In preparation for his news conference, Walz activated the State Emergency Operations Center.
The suspect is described as a white person with brown hair, wearing black body armor over blue shirt and blue jeans, and may disguise himself as law enforcement, according to a warning that was sent out by the police Department. The alert also said that the suspect is armed and dangerous.
