Colin Farrell has shared the difficult decision he and his ex-partner, Kim Bordenave, made to place their adult son, James, in a long-term care facility. James, who was initially misdiagnosed with cerebral palsy, was later diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes severe physical and intellectual disabilities. In an interview with *Candis Magazine*, Colin explained that while some parents choose to care for their children themselves, he worries about what would happen to James if something were to happen to him or Kim. They want to ensure that James is in a safe and supportive environment where he can thrive and feel connected.

Colin recalled the challenges James faced as a baby, missing developmental milestones like sitting up or crawling. After seeking medical advice, James was initially diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects movement and coordination. However, further tests revealed that James had Angelman syndrome. Colin vividly remembers asking the doctor two questions when he received the diagnosis: “What’s the life expectancy?” and “How much pain is involved?” The doctor reassured him that James’ life expectancy was typical and that he wouldn’t experience significant pain.

One of the key symptoms of Angelman syndrome is frequent laughter, which is how the doctor suspected the diagnosis. Colin also discussed how James has struggled with seizures, a common challenge for those with the condition, although James has been seizure-free for nearly a decade. The actor shared some of the tough moments he’s faced while caring for James, including administering medication to manage seizures.

To raise awareness for intellectual disabilities, Colin is launching the Colin Farrell Foundation. Speaking publicly for the first time about James’ condition, Colin emphasized his son’s hard work and determination. He recalled the moving moment when James took his first steps shortly before his fourth birthday, describing it as “magic” and saying he burst into tears.

James, who is nonverbal and requires daily assistance, has reached significant milestones, including feeding himself and controlling his seizures. Colin and Kim have made sure to celebrate these achievements, including his first words at age six. Colin, who previously kept his son’s condition private, said he decided to share his journey to show others that they’re not alone in facing the challenges of raising a child with special needs.

The actor also revealed that James has been a major motivation for him to stay sober. Despite their relationship ending in 2003, Kim and Colin continue to co-parent and support James together. Colin’s second child, Henry, was born in 2009 to his former partner, Polish actress Alicja Bachleda-Curus.
