Ask any parent, and they’ll likely tell you there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for their child. From the moment we become parents, our lives change in ways that are impossible to describe. We devote ourselves to caring for, nurturing, and worrying about the little lives we’ve brought into the world.
But sadly, there are some things that even the most devoted parents can’t prevent. Accidents and illnesses are a part of life, and every year far too many children find themselves facing challenges and conditions beyond their control.
For Alina and Aaron Edwards, their world turned upside down when they learned their nine-year-old daughter, Emma, had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Though heartbroken, they clung to hope, only to be crushed when doctors informed them that after months of treatment, there was nothing more they could do to save Emma.
Determined to make their daughter’s remaining time as special as possible, Emma’s parents decided to fulfill her wishes.
While many children might ask for a celebrity encounter or a trip to Disneyland in such circumstances, Emma’s wish was different. She wanted to marry her childhood sweetheart, DJ, who was also just ten years old.
In no time, Emma’s wish gained attention in their community, and a group of volunteers and well-wishers, dubbed “Emma’s Army,” rallied around her cause. Their goal was simple: make Emma’s dream come true before her time ran out.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation stepped in to support the Edwards family in raising funds. Emma’s mother, Alina, shared, “Most kids want to go to Disneyland, but Emma wanted to get married, be a wife, and have three kids.”
Interestingly, this wasn’t Emma and DJ’s first attempt at a wedding. When they were eight, the two had tried to marry at school, even choosing their bridesmaids and groomsmen, but their teacher didn’t allow it. This time, however, with the support of their parents and the community, their wedding was set to happen.
“We pulled it together in less than two days, and everything was donated. It was so beautiful, and everything came together perfectly,” Alina recalled.
On June 29, Emma’s dream wedding became a reality. She arrived at the venue in a wheelchair, dressed in a gorgeous purple gown, smiling brightly as her father escorted her down the aisle.
The couple exchanged vows and rings, with DJ sharing a kiss with his bride to seal the ceremony.
After the wedding, Emma returned to bed to rest, but her joy from her special day was clear to everyone present.
Sadly, just two weeks later, on July 11, 2023, Emma passed away after a brave 16-month battle with leukemia.
Her obituary read: “Emma Brooks Edwards entered heaven and into the loving arms of her Great-grandma Frannie Annie on July 11, 2023, surrounded by those who loved her most. Emma was 10 years old and fought leukemia, ‘The imposter’, for 16 months. She was born on April 22, 2013, to loving parents and three older siblings, completing the Edwards family. Emma loved arts and crafts, practical jokes, her family and friends, Jesus, and her newlywed ‘husband,’ DJ. She was a light to all who knew her, inspiring everyone she met. She was the best daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, aunt, ‘wife,’ and friend. Her legacy is one of strength, humor, and endless love for all.”
Rest in peace, Emma. A beautiful soul taken far too soon.
Let’s send our thoughts and prayers to all those affected by cancer.
