When she viewed an unexpected alert from her doorbell camera, a lady from Texas discovered that there was more than just a gift waiting for her on her doorway.
Anna, a resident of Cypress, Texas, was taken aback when she received a motion alert for the front door of her house from her Ring doorbell camera on May 8. She had no visitors or deliveries scheduled for that day, so she was not expecting anything to happen. When Anna reviewed the video from her doorbell camera, she discovered something that was much more frightening than she had anticipated.
PEOPLE was able to receive a statement from Anna that was sent to Ring. In the statement, Anna wrote, “I got a motion alert from my doorbell and was shocked to see a wild chicken snake slithering down my wall — something I’d never seen before.”
The chicken snake, which is also referred to as the eastern rat snake or the yellow rat snake, is described as a “large, nonvenomous snake between 3.5 and 7 feet long,” as stated by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Woodlands, farmlands, and suburban neighborhoods are typical habitats for this species, which may be found in the eastern to central regions of the United States.
In this particular instance, the snake was seen slithering around the doorbell and a wire basket that was situated on the front porch, which was located just outside Anna’s door. As shown in the video of the encounter, the snake is seen twisting its way in and out of the crevices inside the container while being entangled between the holes in the basket.
This was the very first time that I had seen it on camera, and to tell you the truth, it gave me the shivers. Anna stated, “I watched it live right after the notification and couldn’t believe it.” She went on to say that her husband’s pleased response to the doorbell camera film was the impetus for her to share the video with other Ring users.
According to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), the chicken snake is a constrictor snake that derives its name from the prey it consumes. It will encircle and suffocate a variety of tiny creatures, including frogs, mice, eggs, and young birds. When the reptile perceives that it is in danger, it puts off a “strong foul odor” in order to ward off potential predators and people.
Chicken snakes are known to be “actually very shy,” and that they often run away rather than fight a perceived threat, despite the fact that Anna’s Ring film shows them doing so.
