A youngster has perished after a fall from a third-story window, officials said.

Arya Lebeau, 12, was visiting a friend’s residence when she fell from a third-floor window at an apartment building in Southbridge, as reported by ABC affiliate WCVB, FOX affiliate WFXT, and Boston.com.

“We currently lack answers, but I am optimistic that we will receive them soon,” said Charlene Cabrera, the little girl’s mother, to WFXT.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office has verified that officials are still investigating a “unattended death” that occurred on the morning of Saturday, May 24.

The district attorney’s office said, “Preliminary reports indicate that a minor fell from a third-story window,” in a statement sent to PEOPLE. The Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has accepted the case, and an autopsy is forthcoming.

The Southbridge Police Department issued a statement confirming the particulars of the incident, indicating that the unnamed teenager fell from a window on Friday evening and was subsequently declared deceased at a medical facility in Worcester.

An inquiry is now under progress. The police department and the Office of the Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner did not promptly reply to PEOPLE’s inquiries for more commentary.

Cabrera recounted to WCVB that she left her kid at the sleepover on Friday evening and was informed that a parent was in attendance. Merely two hours later, she received a call informing her that her daughter had fallen from the window, and reportedly, no adults were around at the time.

The mother informed the publication, “I was told it was a kick that caused her to fall out of the window.”

A Facebook post by a lady claiming to be Arya’s grandma said that a dispute around pizza may have led to the small child falling through the window and sustaining a head injury.

According to WCVB, Arya’s father, Jeremy Lebeau, said that his daughter had previously been at her friend’s home and only learned that the children were alone after the tragic event.

“Having sleepovers was part of her summer agenda, which is what she was engaged in,” Jeremy said the site. “She was the most exceptional child I could have in my life.” I long for her presence. I want closure; irrespective of the circumstances, I need answers. Cabrera expressed gratitude for the assistance received on a GoFundMe campaign made by a friend to assist with burial expenses, while mourning her daughter. The organizer and Arya’s family did not promptly reply to PEOPLE’s inquiries for comment.

“I cannot articulate the depth of sorrow I experience due to the loss of my sole child,” she wrote. “I am confident that we will generate sufficient funds to provide my daughter with a tranquil repose.”
