**Charlotte’s Josh King Reflects on His Emotional American Idol Journey and What’s Next**
Charlotte native Josh King won over hearts nationwide with his deeply emotional performances on *American Idol*, making it all the way to the Top 8 before his journey came to a close. Now, he’s taking time to reflect on the wild ride and share what’s ahead.
King’s final performance was a touching rendition of Michael Bublé’s “Home” during the Judge’s Song Contest. In a rare act of humility, he asked the judges to save fellow contestant Mattie Pruitt instead of him. “I had already achieved what I came here for,” he said. “I sang the songs I wanted, met the people I hoped to meet. I just felt Mattie had more to show.”
Calling his Idol experience “tough, hectic, but fun,” King said the show pushed him to grow quickly while also forming strong bonds with his fellow contestants. “The Top 24 felt like family,” he said, noting close friendships with Baylee Littrell, Desmond Roberts, and Grayson Torrence. “We were together all the time — it felt like a shared adventure, even trauma bonding at times.”
Among his most unforgettable moments was performing “All by Myself.” While not his strongest vocal performance, he says it was the song he felt most emotionally connected to. If he could redo one moment, it would be “Until I Found You” from Hollywood Week — a performance he felt needed more preparation.
King, who once played piano for travelers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, said moving from anonymous background music to the national spotlight was a massive shift. “At the airport, people pass by without noticing. On Idol, every move is watched,” he said.
Now that his Idol chapter has ended, King is turning his attention to songwriting, recording, and exploring new collaborations — including a possible project with Grayson Torrence. He’s also eyeing tour opportunities and hopes to open for major acts. “I’m excited to see where this road leads,” he said.
Although he was surprised by how far he advanced, King says the experience affirmed his passion. “For the first time in a while, I got to truly do what I love — and now I know this is what I’m meant to do.”
