Originally, Leslie Nielsen played the role of self-serious investigator Frank Drebin, who was unable to advance through the ranks of the police squad. The movie is based on the franchise The Naked Gun, which was created by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker.
The new movie stars Liam Neeson as Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr., the son of the character played by Nielsen, who is attempting to follow in his father’s footsteps.
