It is not on the Record Today was his 89th birthday, but no one phoned him, therefore it was a birthday that was completely forgotten. Within the retirement community, he was seated in a serene manner in the corner of the dining area. A tray of ravioli that was still steaming was placed in front of him. Next to a glass of water that had not yet been opened, there was a cup of black coffee. He was looking at nothing in particular, his eyes red, exhausted, and moist with emotion. He stared at nothing. It was the eighty-ninth year of his life.
No one has spoken. There will be no balloons, no cards, and no phone calls. Only the faint clatter of cutlery on plates and the mild murmur of conversation could be heard in the vicinity of him. It was still the case that the planet was turning. On the other hand, he used to attach significance to this day. It had become only another square on the calendar at this point. He was a father of three children.
He used to consider them to be his whole galaxy. He helped them through the long nights of fevers and tears, held their hands as they made their first steps, and worked hard to ensure that they never went without anything. He stayed awake during all of these circumstances. His home used to be filled with the sound of their lively laughter. Since then, silence has taken its place.
Once, he gave a nurse a false grin and said, “They brought me here saying it was for my own good.” It was a statement that he made. It’s possible that it was. Nevertheless, I had the impression that I was left behind. The months went by. The visits came to an end. The number of calls decreased. Over time, birthdays became dates that he was the only one who could remember.
It did not bother him. It’s just a downer… However, this was not because he was unaware of how hectic life was. It was not because he harbored resentment. However, since his love for them remained unshaken despite the passage of time and the physical distance between them.
It wasn’t luxury that he longed for all along. There are no extravagant gestures or expensive gifts. Basically, just give me a hug. It was a voice well known to me. A pleasant phrase. A simple “Happy birthday, Dad” would be quite appropriate. That was sufficient in every way. We don’t talk about the fact that elderly people often feel lonely enough.
Due to the fact that the subject of discussion is unsettling, we avoid discussing it. because it prompts us to engage in thought. On the other hand, hundreds of parents and grandparents are occupying rooms that were formerly filled with laughter and pleasure by themselves on a daily basis. They cling to memories that grow progressively blurry with time, despite the fact that they are surrounded by strangers.
They do not have a great deal of criteria. For all time to be remembered. It is a visit. One of the calls. For a moment. Considering that kids are aware that we each have our own life, it is not because they need us to make them feel less alone. They are just interested in joining them. having the experience of being noticed. to continue to be relevant. When we were younger, our worlds were centered on them. The biggest cheers were heard from them at school productions. stayed up when we came home late in the evening. in order to get what we needed, they made sacrifices that we did not know about.
And what about now? It is counted how many days have passed since the last visit. Their importance may be determined by the number of times their phone rings, which is a good indicator. It is possible that this day will be the one that someone remembers. The individual shown in the photograph has not been identified at this time.
On the other hand, he is a strong advocate for a variety of causes. Fathers who were once tall and towering now bent over their children. It was our grandparents who were responsible for preparing our favorite meals in the beginning, and their hands were trembling with age. They carry with them the knowledge, the anguish, the pleasure, and the tales of decades.
However, we fail to remember
It is not due of malice but rather because of habit. What a speedy life! Work is a challenging endeavor. Children are increasing in age. You can always find something there. On the other hand, we often fail to see that time is running out. When the time comes, the chair will be vacant. Not because it is too hot, but because the ravioli have disappeared, they will no longer be available in the future.
In addition, it won’t just be they who remain quiet on that particular day. The impact of it will be felt deeply inside our hearts. at looking at old photographs, reading their notes, and listening to their voicemails, we will be able to hear their voice once again. In addition, we will mutter, “I wish I had just called back.” Just one more, please. It is not the intention of this to engender guilt in anybody; rather, it is to serve as a reminder of love.
to serve as a reminder that love may be shown by actions that are quite unassuming. The duration of the phone call was 10 minutes. The letter was written by hand. An appearance on Sunday. It’s a recollection that involves coffee. Despite their apparent lack of significance, these occurrences are everything to them. When it comes to the mothers and dads who are waiting in silence in hospitals and homes… You are not forgotten by us.
Regarding the grandfathers who are now sitting there in tears as they are enjoying a birthday meal by themselves… I hold you in high regard. in spite of the fact that we can forget to say it. regardless of whether or not there is a ringing phone. No matter what challenges life throws at you, remain ezoic. Today, please take a moment.
Make sure to contact your father. Visit your granny to visit her. That is the message that you have been intending to convey. Inquire about the lives they have lived. They should be reminded that they continue to be valuable. Simply because, in the end, the only thing that will remain in our memories is whether or not we were there when it was really important. Allow this story to act as a trigger for you.
Please use this to serve as a reminder that the choice to be a family is something that we make on a daily basis and is not something that has been neglected. it is to be worried. to show up. to love in spite of the difficulties involved. In addition, if you have already lost someone, be sure that… In order to assist them in remembering it, tell them this story. Don’t forget to remind someone else of this. Permit the movement of another individual.
For there are times when all that is required to bring about a change in a person’s life and to heal their heart is a few words and a few minutes. ❤️ The dads, mothers, grandfathers, and grandparents who gave up all for their children will be in our memories forever.
