Actors are being encouraged by Ian McKellen to take ownership of their reality.

Within the context of an interview with The Times of London that was published on March 9th, the British actor and legend voiced his sympathy for LGBTQ+ performers who do not feel comfortable discussing their sexual status.

Within the context of the conversation, McKellen, who is 85 years old, said, “I have never met anybody who came out who regretted it.” It makes me sad to think that any renowned person would feel that they are unable to come out. Being in the closet is a total waste of time and there is no need to do so.

“Don’t listen to your advisers, listen to your heart,” he said in conclusion. “Pay attention to your homosexual friends who are more knowledgeable. Make your way out. Embrace the warmth of the sun.

McKellen, who made his public announcement in 1988 during a radio broadcast with the BBC, discussed how his decision to come out altered the way he viewed both his professional life and his personal life in an interview with Variety in 2023. According to what he shared with the publication, “almost overnight, everything in my life changed for the better. My relationships with people and my entire attitude toward acting changed.”

While chatting with The Times, the actor who played Lord of the Rings also reminisced on his own path, particularly the significant role he played in the production of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II in the 1970s. It is the connection between King Edward II of England and Piers Gaveston that is the primary subject of the play. Additionally, the play focuses on the assassination of King Edward on the instructions of English lord Roger Mortimer.

The production was taped for the screen, and it included the first kiss between a person of the same gender that was shown on British television. McKellen and his costar James Laurenson created history. “I still hear from men of my generation who say that kiss was a huge moment for them,” McKellen said to reporters.

McKellen also discussed the current condition of LGBTQ+ representation in a number of other industries, noting that there has not yet been an out homosexual person to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, nor has there been an openly gay person to serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom or to play in the Premier League.

McKellen continued by saying, “We always have to be alert,” in reference to the rights of people of the same gender. “I hope that more people in this nation are less afraid of homosexual people and more tolerant of them as a result of gay marriage happening in this country. Otherwise, the image is not as clear as it may be.”
