At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Jimmy Carter was given a posthumous award.

Five weeks after his passing, the former president, who passed away in December 2024, won a Grammy for audiobook narration for Last Sunday in Plains: A Centennial Celebration on Sunday, February 2.

On behalf of his late grandpa, who had won three Grammys in his lifetime, Jason Carter received the honor.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason said, “My grandfather was incredibly important to me,” as he accepted the prize. “I just wanted to say that having his words captured in this way for my family and the world is truly remarkable.” “We’ve felt this enormous outpouring of love from all around the world, from many of the people in this room, over the last few weeks.”

Jason said, “They are treasures of his,” to reporters at the awards ceremony. “He has a huge passion for music. He loves the artistic side of music. He is an artist in many respects, and it has played a significant role in both his personal and political lives.

He went on: “He was an author, he was a painter, and a variety of things, but he really appreciates the aspect of the Grammys that recognizes creativity.”

“This particular project is particularly close to his heart because it’s his Sunday School lessons,” Jason added. “And he taught from his school in Plains, Georgia, in this little rural church thirty or so days a year for fifty years, not realizing at the time that they would be his last Sunday School lectures. And it’s an essential aspect of his personality.”

His last Sunday school lectures at his boyhood church, Maranatha Baptist in Plains, Georgia, are recorded in Last Sunday in Plains: A Centennial Celebration. Carter’s teachings, Kabir Sehgal’s instrumental arrangements, and Jon Batiste, Darius Rucker, and LeAnn Rimes’ covers of songs from the Great American Songbook are all included on the 10-track CD.

The 39th president of the United States, who won the Nobel Peace Prize and changed his reputation from a one-term leader to a cherished humanitarian, passed away in December 2024 at the unprecedented age of 100.

According to The Washington Post, his son James E. Carter III attested to his loss at home in Plains, Georgia. The Carter Center also posted on X (previously Twitter) to announce his passing.

Rosalynn Carter, Carter’s wife of over 80 years, passed away 13 months before at the age of 96.
