The musician’s representative has announced that Barry Goldberg, a well-known keyboardist who played with Bob Dylan, has passed away.
Ten years after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a kind of blood cancer, the blues-rock artist passed away in hospice care, accompanied by his family, which included his wife, Gail, and his son, Aram.
Goldberg was a well-known figure in the American music scene of the 1960s, since he was a member of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He is most remembered for playing the keyboard for Dylan when the folk hero introduced his new electric sound at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
The performance, which was a source of controversy at the time, was replicated in the 2024 biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which tells the story of Dylan’s life. In the film, Justin Levine played Goldberg.
Dylan was booed by the audience when he switched from playing an acoustic guitar to an electric guitar and performed with an electric band that featured Goldberg. Dylan and his band played “Like A Rolling Stone” live for the first time, despite the criticism they received. The song is today regarded as one of the best songs of all time.
Goldberg was also a record producer, and he produced records for Percy Sledge, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, and The Textones. He also produced Dylan’s version of “People Get Ready,” which was originally penned by Curtis Mayfield for his band, The Impressions.
