The father of a California kid who was one year old and was accused of beheading him is being remembered as a “kind and joyful soul” by his family.

According to a news statement that was distributed on Facebook on Friday, December 20, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said that Andrey Demskiy was taken into custody at around 4:15 a.m. local time on that day. This was in response to a 911 call that was made regarding a “family disturbance.”

Deputy sheriffs from the SCSO North Patrol arrived to the scene, where they found Demskiy, 28, suspected of attacking both his wife and her mother, according to the police.

Upon discovering that Demskiy “refused to answer the door and surrender peacefully,” the officers discovered that a child was present in the apartment with the father alone. Specifically, they said in their letter that the father had “possibly injured the child after throwing him.” They then “forced entered” the residence, according to the SCSO officers.

Demskiy was found to be “uncooperative” and “physically resistive” by the police as they entered the residence. Additionally, the police found the severed skull of a kid inside a bedroom. In the next moments, detectives from the Child Abuse Bureau of the Sheriff’s Office and investigators from the crime scene arrived at the location.

A knife was used by Demskiy to “behead and murder” the infant, who was just one year old, according to the police.

“Detectives arrested and booked him into the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains in custody ineligible for bail,” the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.

There are three felony charges that have been brought against Demskiy, according to the documents that are kept in his detention. These charges include murder, assault by means of force likely to create grave bodily harm, and corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant. December 24 is the day when he is set to appear in court again.

After further investigation, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has determined that the youngster in question is Micha Demskiy, as reported by the NBC station KCRA. The infant has also been recognized by loved ones via a GoFundMe campaign, which has now quadrupled its target of $25,000 and has received nearly $57,000 in contributions to help the boy’s family as of Sunday, December 22. During the fundraising event, Angelina Demskiy was revealed to be the mother of the kid.

The request for confirmation that was made by PEOPLE on December 22 was not immediately met with a response from the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

His mother-in-law was “transported to the hospital by ambulance for her injuries, which were not life-threatening,” according to the South Carolina State Police, at the time that Demskiy was being arrested.

As a spokeswoman for the South Carolina State Police, Amar Gandhi said to KCRA that the suspected beheading was “one of the most horrific things” that he has known about. It was also said by him that the authorities were “visibly shaken.”

“For this family who has got to pick up the pieces and go on — I mean, their world is shattered,” Gandhi said in his speech.

Since then, a monument has been constructed outside of the child’s home, according to WKYC. The memorial is comprised of candles, teddy bears, and even flowers.

In an interview with the news organization, Gandhi said that he “cannot think of a worse call in 20 years” and that the authorities would have the case “in their hearts and minds for the rest of their careers and beyond.”

It was said in the GoFundMe campaign that Micah passed away as a result of a “devastating chain of events.” Lilli Eirikh was the event organizer.

“The sweet little boy was a kind and joyful soul, loving all people and especially dogs,” she wrote in her journal. Everyone who came into touch with him had a warm and fuzzy feeling in their hearts with his lovely grin and compassionate spirit. Especially his mother, he had a deep affection for his family. His favorite things to do were to spend time with his family, to go to the park, and to sing hymns with his family.

“If you have it on your heart to help our family in this difficult time, please keep us in your prayers,” Eirikh proceeded to say. In the event that you are able to provide financial assistance, may God reward you triple. In the event that you are unable to provide financial assistance, we ask that you pray for the Demskiy and Vinnikov families.
