Enter Arno Kamminga, a swimmer from the Netherlands who participated in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke on the first day of the competition and astonished social media with his eye-catching swim shorts. Despite the fact that he came in second place, Kamminga brought a lot of attention to the internet with his unique swimwear. During the Olympic Games Paris 2024, which took place on Saturday (July 27) at the Paris La Defense Arena in Nanterre, France, the athlete, who is 28 years old, competed while wearing a pair of trunks that were both snugly fitting and prominently shown.

According to News.com.au, the Netherlands created an optical illusion by applying a flesh-colored orange on the thighs of their trunks. This resulted in Arno being nearly completely exposed. This brazen choice stunned social media, with one user remarking on X (which was then known as Twitter) that they were “definitely watching for the sport.” The only question that was asked was, “Name???”

A another person yelled out, “PUBLIC?” in a loud voice. Is this within the law? Throughout the history of the Olympic swimming competition, swimmers have traditionally worn suits that covered as little skin as possible. Shaving the whole body was the primary method for enhancing their speed through the water. According to NBC Olympics, the start of the “bodysuit revolution” occurred at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. These Games were the first time when swimsuits that went from the neck to the knee were used, and several medalists wore the Aquablade type from Speedo.

Because swimmers were wearing suits that covered the majority of their bodies by the time the Sydney Games were held in the year 2000, the question of whether or not these suits increased performance was brought up. Due to the fact that the governing organization of swimming, World Aquatics, decided against prohibiting these suits, they have gained universal acceptability. Speedo’s Fastskin suit had already gained popularity among gold medalists by the time the 2004 Games rolled around. In 2008, the Beijing Games saw the introduction of Speedo’s LZR Racer, which was billed as the world’s fastest swimsuit due to its compressive, water-repellent, and chlorine-resistant fabric that reduced drag and streamlined the shape of the swimmer.

Arno was highly dissatisfied with his performance, despite the fact that he finished in second place in the Men’s 100-meter Breaststroke event with a timing of 59.12 seconds. He expressed his dissatisfaction by writing on Instagram, “Not what I came for,” along with an emoji of a broken heart. In addition, Arno, a resident of Katwijk, voiced his concern over a recent doping case that included 23 Chinese swimmers who returned adverse test results for trimetazidine, a chemical that is prohibited. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recognized the claims in April, but also accepted the conclusions of a Chinese investigation that connected the positive tests to drug contamination. The investigation was conducted inside China.

In an interview with Reuters, Arno expressed his disapproval with the lack of transparency, saying, “Everyone is questioning it, therefore it’s a lose-lose situation for everyone – for swimming fans and Chinese swimmers alike.”It is impossible, in my opinion, to pass judgment or make any kind of statement without having complete knowledge. At the same time as many people were delighted by Arno’s trunks, other Olympic clothing, notably the track and field outfits worn by Team USA, received criticism. There was a lot of controversy over Nike’s risqué clothing in April, with accusations of sexism and worries about how practical it was.

On Instagram, Lauren Fleshman, a former runner who won the world championship for the United States, voiced her disapproval by writing, “I’m sorry, but show me one WNBA or NWSL team that would enthusiastically support this kit.” It is important that women’s kits improve both their mental and physical performance. Men would wear this gear if it really boosted their physical performance rather than just looking good. This is not a track and field outfit that is considered elite. This is a costume that was designed by patriarchal forces, which are no longer acceptable or required in order to draw attention to women’s sports.
