The declaration that Kelly Bishop made to her mother, Jane, that she did not want to have children of her own was made while she was still a little kid.
As stated in this week’s print edition of People, Bishop, who is 80 years old, says, “I was quite young.” “When I was an adult, my mother even reminded me, ‘You were a little girl when you said… I’m not going to have children.'” I recall thinking about this.
According to Bishop, “I meant it.” “And yes, it was OK. “I mean, that’s a choice,” she said.
Beginning with her groundbreaking role in the 1975 Broadway musical A Chorus Line, which was based upon tapes that Bishop recorded about her life as a chorus dancer, to her part as Jennifer Grey’s mother in the 1980s classic Dirty Dancing, to her beloved role as the stern Gilmore matriarch Emily on the 2000-2007 family drama Gilmore Girls, the actress, who has won a Tony Award, is reflecting on her stage and screen career in her new memoir, The Third Gilmore Girl, which will be published by Gallery Books on September 17th.
But Bishop, who says that she is normally a reserved person, also opens up about her personal life, including the fact that she had an abortion when she was in her thirties and that her first marriage to a compulsive gambler ended in divorce.
“Just knowing that that option was there was such a relief,” Bishop recalls. “It was so much easier to proceed.” “Of course, the idea that I may get pregnant by mistake had never occurred to me until the moment. It never even occurred to me to consider it. However, there was a sense of comfort in the knowledge that it was not only possible but also legal.

Bishop claims that she did not want to include her abortion experience in the book at the beginning of the process, but she did not do so because she had “any feeling of shame and wrongdoing.”
“That is something private that I just was not going to put in until the Supreme Court got rid of Roe v. Wade,” Bishop adds. “I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.” In addition, an increasing number of women, including actresses and other women who were considered to be celebrities, were coming out of my generation and stating, “I had an abortion.” My abortion was performed.'”
Despite the fact that Bishop has described herself as “not really political,” she has found that this subject has become a significant one for her. She recounts going to a pro-choice march in Washington, DC in 2004, together with the creator of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and the producer, Helen Pai. She adds that discussing her personal experience with abortion was a way to connect with younger readers.

Bishop adds, “I just wanted to include it so that young women of today can get a sense of where we were then.” Her intention was to include it.
Norma Sheryl Leonard is the daughter of Bishop’s late husband, former ESPN and CNN broadcaster Lee Leonard, to whom Bishop was married from 1981 until Leonard’s death in 2018. Bishop is the stepmother of Norma Sheryl Leonard, despite the fact that she does not have any biological children of her own. Allen Leonard passed away in 2018.
The couple’s marriage was marked by “so much love and respect between the two of us,” according to Bishop, who describes the relationship. There was no attempt on his part to dominate me. Which presents a challenge due to the fact that he was fifteen years my older and, in all honesty, from an entirely different generation.
Currently, Bishop, who lives in New Jersey with her hound dog Dolly, is clinging to another concept that she experienced throughout her childhood: the need to continue acquiring new knowledge.
“There are things that you may learn each and every day. For example, even the tiniest of things,” Bishop explains. “Therefore, while you are gaining knowledge, you are developing. I hope that you continue to develop, since that is what I desire.
Preorders for The Third Gilmore Girl are now being accepted at any bookstore or bookstore that sells books. The book is scheduled to be released on September 17th.
