Maria Branyas Morera, who set the record for the oldest person in the world, passed away at the age of 117.

Morera’s family made the announcement on X (which was previously known as Twitter) on Tuesday, August 20, that she had passed away “peacefully” while she was sleeping.

“We are no longer with Maria Branyas. She has passed away in the manner that she desired: in her sleep, without suffering, and without any discomfort,” they said in Catalan. A few of days ago, she shared with us, “One day, I will leave this place.” In addition, I will not taste coffee again, nor will I have yogurt, nor will I touch the Fairy… I will also leave behind my memories and my thoughts.'”

The family was also informed by Morera. The following statement was made by them in a subsequent post: “I will cease to exist in this body.” “One day I don’t know, but it’s very close, this long journey will be over,” she said in conclusion. “De.ath will find me exhausted from having lived for such a long time, but more than anything, I want it to find me smiling, free, and content.”

Adding, “We will always remember her for her advice and kindness,” her family said in a statement that was translated from Catalan.

After Lucile Randon, who was 118 years old and from France, passed away in January 2023, the Guinness World Records organization declared that Morera was the oldest person still alive on the earth until that point.

Morera was born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907, the same year as Katherine Hepburn and John Wayne, both of whom have now passed away, were born, according to the organization concerned.

This took place one year after her parents had moved to the United States from another country. Despite this, the family eventually relocated back to Spain and lived in Catalonia after a period of eight years.

The transatlantic trip was the cause of de.ath for Morera’s father, who passed away from pulmonary TB while they were traveling to Spain.

Morera was reportedly married to a physician for a period of forty years in Girona, Spain, as reported by The New York Times Magazine. In addition to having three children together, the couple eventually became grandparents to more than a dozen grandkids.

After a period of twenty years, Morera proceeded to dwell at a nursing facility known as Residència Santa María del Tura, which is located in Olot, Spain.

The majority of the time, her daughter would assist her with posting photographs and words of wisdom on X.

She wrote in January 2023, “Life is not eternal for anyone,” and she meant it. A new year is a gift, a modest celebration, a fresh experience, a wonderful trip, and a time of delight for someone of my age. Let’s have pleasure in life together.
