For the purpose of transforming into the head of the cartel, Griselda Blanco, Sofía Vergara concealed her stunning appearance.
In an interview with Variety that was published on Wednesday, August 14, the actress, who is 52 years old, discussed the physical metamorphosis that she went through in order to represent the title character in the miniseries Griselda that is produced by Netflix. The miniseries is based on the life of the Colombian drug lord.
The former cast member of Modern Family observed that Blanco seemed rather unlike to her in real life. “The real Griselda Blanco had something — she had some kind of sex appeal that I needed to show,” Vergara remarked, adding that she wanted to conceal her curves and didn’t want to “jiggle.” “She was maybe not a Barbie doll, but the real Griselda Blanco had”
The bouncing that is inherent for Latina women was something that I did not want to manifest. It was necessary for me to wrap myself in order to prevent my butt from moving about. “I had to wear a really bad bra,” Vergara added, before adding that she also covered another area of her body. “It was absolutely necessary.”
“I had to cover my arms because I have very skinny arms, and you don’t look threatening when you have this stupid little arm,” the judge from America’s Got Talent added. “I had to cover my arms.”
It was said by the publication that Vergara spent more than four hours every day in hair and makeup in order to turn into Blanco. This transformation involved the application of prosthetics, face and body makeup, and a thorough wig application.
Additionally, Vergara acquired a few new talents in preparation for the part, one of which was the ability to smoke, which she learned how to do from the director Andrés Baiz.
“In my whole life, I had never once smoked. During the month leading up to our beginning, Andy would visit me at my home. During our conversations, we would discuss the screenplay, and he would instruct me on how to smoke, use cocaine, and crack cocaine,” she said.

As part of the same conversation, Vergara discussed the possible future of the television show Modern Family. During an interview with Variety, she said that she and her former on-screen spouse Ed O’Neill have a running joke about how he cannot pass away before they make a sequel.
The joke that I tell him all the time is, “Ed, don’t pass away. mostly due to the fact that you are the eldest among us, and if we decide to do a sequel, it will take some time. You can’t possibly be de.ad!'” As Vergara put it.
In the year 2023, Vergara gave an exclusive interview to PEOPLE in which she discussed how her transition into La Jefa was more than simply a physical change. The manner that I moved and the way that I spoke needed to be altered. “I didn’t want it to look like Gloria Pritchett with a fake nose,” she explained, alluding to the role she plays on Modern Family. “I wanted the people to forget about Gloria — that was the main thing.”
There was a behind-the-scenes look that was published by Netflix prior to the premiere of the series. The look focused on Vergara’s appearance, and Baiz said that Vergara’s physical metamorphosis “was one of the toughest aspects of the whole show.”
However, the actress said that her efforts were rewarded, as she stated in a separate interview with PEOPLE, “The people that have watched it now have been so responsive, and they’ve been telling me how much they love it.” The way in which people are responding to it is a really interesting thing to see.
Vergara’s sixth Primetime Emmy nomination, which she received for her performance in Griselda, is now available to see on Netflix.
