Following the unexpected loss of her sister-in-law, Maggie Steffens is in a state of sadness. Her sister-in-law had traveled to Paris in order to witness the water polo Olympian participate in the 2024 Summer Games.

The information was verified to the Associated Press on July 28 by Steffens, who has won three gold medals in his career. She was quoted as saying that Lulu Conner, the younger sister of Steffens’ husband Bobby Conner, passed away at the age of 26 due to a “medical emergency.” Lulu’s passing was verified to PEOPLE by representatives of the United States women’s water polo team.

“She was so excited for the Olympic Games,” Steffens relayed to the Associated Press. “We are on really close terms. She is the brightest star in the universe. She just offers a great deal of happiness to everyone. It is always her ability to bring people together.

Steffens, who wed Bobby in November 2023, said to the Associated Press that she honored Lulu by releasing a bunch of flowers into the Seine at the opening ceremony on July 26 so that she could pay tribute to her.

“My team has been a really big support system for me,” she said according to the publication as she struggled to come to terms with the stunning loss. The fact that I, along with my spouse and his whole family, have been going through a lot of difficulties is evident. It is a nightmare, and it is utterly startling. I mean, it is a nightmare. But I believe that just experiencing her energy here is, like I said before, it’s incredible. And it is my sincere wish that we are able to make her proud each and every day.

“Lulu was full of energy, and so excited to be here and watch this team,” the women’s coach Adam Krikorian said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. “So excited to be here and watch this team.” As of right now, they are going to “honor her by playing with energy.”

Flavor Flav, who has been the most devoted supporter of the United States women’s water polo team, has uploaded a video on Sunday showing Steffen’s husband presenting him with a unique clock necklace that Lulu had crafted for him before she passed away. Flavor Flav has been the team’s greatest fan, supporting them in person, in the pool, and financially.

“Imma be wearing a VERY SPECIAL second clock for the duration of the Olympics and more,,, MADE WITH LOVE BY ARTIST LULU CONNER,” Flav said in the comments section.

People was informed by a representative of the squad that Lulu custom-made clocks for each and every member of the women’s water polo team.

The preliminary rounds of the women’s water polo competition started on Saturday, July 27, with the United States of America defeating Greece by a score of 15-6. When they next face Spain, it will be on July 29.

Steffens said with PEOPLE that although she is competing in the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020, she always finds that establishing unity among her colleagues helps her get through challenging situations. “There are a lot of things that you are unable to perform when you are by alone, but when you are among other people, the seemingly impossible becomes feasible. At the moment, she made the statement that “it’s all about the circle, it’s all about the team, and knowing that at the end of the day, all of our hands are in.”
