Prior to her accession to the throne, Princess Elizabeth was a mother to two small children.
RR Auction is now accepting bids on a handwritten letter that was signed by the queen who made history to her midwife, Helen Rowe, who is referred to as “Rowie” in the message. The letter bears the date October 4, 1950, which is less than two months after the then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip became parents to two children. When Princess Anne was born in August of that year, the Prince of Wales, who would later become King Charles, became a big brother.
At the time, Elizabeth was 24 years old when she sent the letter. It was written from Balmoral Castle in Scotland, which is a cherished house that the British royal family often retreats to during the late summer and early autumn. In September of 2022, at the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth passed away at this location.
“We are all getting on very well up here and I am feeling very much stronger already,” the monarch stated in her letter. “It was pleasant to be on the hill once more on the second day that I was here; however, on the third day, the Jeep that transports people all over the ground failed to pick me up, and I had to walk down to the road. As a consequence, I strained my knee on something, which has proven to be very effective in keeping me within my limits! On the other hand, the air is so fresh that I feel better every day, and while I still go to sleep in the afternoon, I don’t do it as often as I used to.
She proceeded with updates on her two children, saying, “Charles is getting fatter as a result of his enormous appetite and the fact that he exercises a great deal.” When he stares at something that he is unable to reach and then turns his back on me and says, “Mummy, lift!” I find it really difficult to explain away what he is doing. Anne, who wasn’t really fond of the rattling to begin with, has been slowly putting on weight up here, and she has wonderful pink cheeks when she has been out. He, on the other hand, loved the train travel a great deal more than Anne did. As the amount of sugar in her feeds progressively increases, she does not seem to be nearly as hungry as she used to be, and she often sleeps right up until it is time for her to drink.
“The children’s grandmother is spoiling her eldest quite openly and will do so with Anne if she got a chance!” In conclusion, Elizabeth said that she held out hope that she would be able to see her midwife at the baptism of Princess Anne.
A message that was four pages long was signed with the words “Yours very sincerely, Elizabeth.”
At the time of the 28th of June, the highest offer for the note that was handwritten and signed was $1,149.
In a statement, Bobby Livingston, Executive Vice President of RR Auction, stated, “A wonderful letter from the princess, touching on the health of her two young children: Charles, who was only one month and 19 days old when this letter was written, and Anne, who was only one month and one month old when this letter was written.”
Charles was three years old when Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, making him the heir apparent, while Anne was only one years old. Additionally, Prince Andrew was born in 1960, and Prince Edward was born in 1964. Both of these children were welcomed into the world by the Queen and Prince Philip.
An additional item that will be included in the Fine Autograph and Artifacts sale that will be held by RR sale and will end on July 10 is a signed picture of Princess Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, when they were youngsters. Additionally, there is an enlarged color image of Queen Elizabeth that was signed in 1968 and depicts her wearing her royal jewels.
