The return of Sarah Paulson to Broadway is a smashing success!
On Sunday, June 16, in New York City, the actress who played the main role in the play Appropriate, who is 49 years old, was awarded the Tony Award for best performance by a leading actress in a play.
Toni, the oldest child of the Lafayette family, is attempting to reconnect with her siblings while sorting out her late father’s inheritance in Arkansas. Paulson walked the stage at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center to claim the trophy for her part in the Branden Jacobs-Jenkins play. Toni is the eldest child of the Lafayette family.
During her victory speech, she expressed her gratitude to her companion Holland Taylor, who was 81 years old. “Holland, thank you for loving me,” she added.
Afterwards, she extended her gratitude to the members of the cast as well as the authors of the play Appropriate, which was also awarded the Tony Awards in 2024 for best revival of a play and best lighting design of a play.
“I am standing here tonight because of the mighty talent that is Branden Jacobs-Jenkins,” Paulson said to reporters. Because you have placed your faith in me, I will never be able to adequately express my appreciation to you.
“Some nights when I am backstage… I think about the walls of theaters all over this magical town holding the impact of each and every one of you in this room and all of those who came before,” she said. “I wonder what it would be like to be a part of this transformation.” In addition, I take into consideration how fortunate those walls are to be able to bear witness to the unrelenting investigation of human experience that we make an effort to investigate each night for one another.

The Tony Award nomination and victory are both firsts for Paulson. Previously, she was awarded the Desk Drama Award for finest lead actress in a play as well as the Drama League Award for noteworthy performance for the same part.
In addition, this play is Paulson’s first appearance on Broadway in almost a decade; she had previously participated in the productions of Collected Stories (2010) and The Glass Menagerie (2005).
Additionally, Corey Stoll, Michael Esper, Ella Beatty, Elle Fanning, and Natalie Gold are featured in Appropriate, which was written by Jacobs-Jenkins, who has been a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize on two separate occasions. From the time it was first created in 2013, it went through a number of performances all around the country and even overseas before finally making its debut on Broadway in December of 2023.
Jacobs-Jenkins, who is 39 years old, gave an interview to Vogue earlier this month in which she discussed Appropriate, including its casting and the audience’s reaction to it.
“Sarah, at her core and in her roots, is a theater artist — an actual artist who is interested in pushing envelopes and upending expectations about what people can and cannot do,” he added. “Sarah is a theater artist.” “So I think, in some ways, she was the perfect person for this play.”
As a result of the play’s success at Broadway’s Hayes Theater, where it was first performed and then extended for an additional three weeks, the production company decided to move the play to the Belasco Theater, where it will continue to run for an additional thirteen weeks until June 23.
