For the last time, Coleman appeared on television in the part of the father of the character played by Kevin Costner in the acclaimed drama series.
A homage has been offered by Kevin Costner to the late actor Dabney Coleman, who portrayed the role of his character’s father on the television show Yellowstone.
Quincy Coleman, Coleman’s daughter, revealed in a statement to ET that her father passed away on Thursday afternoon. Coleman was most known for his performances in the television shows 9 to 5, Tootsie, Boardwalk Empire, and other shows. He was 92 years old.
In a post that he published on his Instagram account on Friday, Kevin Costner paid respect to his former co-star, who had previously played the role of John Dutton Jr., the dad of John Dutton III, which Costner portrayed.
In reference to the episode of Yellowstone from season 2 in which his character saw a flashback of his father’s dying days, the actor tweeted photos of what he described as “one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve been a part of.”
“It is truly a privilege to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Dabney Coleman,” added Costner. “May he rest in peace.”

“Sins of the Father” was the title of the emotionally charged season 2 finale, which ended up being Coleman’s last on-screen performance. The episode culminated with Costner’s character adopting Rip (Cole Hauser) as a son and dealing through his own feelings over his father’s demise.
Coleman’s daughter sent a statement to ET after hearing the news of her father’s passing. In the statement, she said, “My Father, Dabney Wharton Coleman, took his last earthly breath peacefully and exquisitely at 92 in his Santa Monica home on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 1:50pm.”
“My father crafted his time here on earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” she continued talking about. “He moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence, and mastery as he lived his life,” Dabney Coleman was a teacher, a hero, and a king. His spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones, and his legacy. He will be eternally survived by his children, Meghan, Kelly, Randy, and Quincy Coleman, as well as his grandchildren, Hale and Gabe Torrance, Luie Freundl, and Kai and Coleman Biancaniello. Dabney Coleman is a gift and a blessing in life and in loss.
Additionally, Jeffrey Goldberg, who is Coleman’s agent, commented, “I will only add that it has been a great privilege to have represented Dabney and to have been able to call him my friend.” He will be sorely missed by this world.
