Brittney Griner claims that she had several thoughts of ending her life by taking her own life when she was incarcerated in a cell in Russia.
In a long interview that aired on Wednesday night, the WNBA superstar revealed to Robin Roberts of ABC News that she had these ideas just after Russian police placed her in jail for bringing vape cartridges in her baggage at a Moscow airport in February 2022. The interview was conducted just after the Russian authorities sent her to jail.
“I wanted to take my life more than once in the first weeks,” Griner said in his interview. “I felt like leaving here so badly.”
In spite of this, the woman, who is 33 years old, disclosed to Roberts that she did not go through with it because she was afraid that her corpse would not be returned to her family.
“I really can’t put them through that,” she remarked. “I have to endure this.”
Griner said that she was subjected to deplorable living circumstances when she was incarcerated. She explained to Roberts that her mattress had a significant blood mark on it, and that there was a lack of soap and toilet paper in the restrooms.
She also said that at one point, Russian authorities forced her to write a letter in which she asked for forgiveness and for “thanks from their so-called great leader” Vladimir Putin.
“I didn’t want to do it,” she said to me, “but at the same time, I want to come home.”
Due to the fact that you are aware, Griner was found guilty of drug charges and sentenced to nine years in Russian jail in August of 2022… after a protracted trial. In the end, she was sent to a prison colony in Mordovia, where she was compelled to labor and cut cloth for members of the military.
When Griner was released from prison in December 2022, however, the United States agreed to transfer Viktor Bout, a Russian armaments trader who had been convicted of a crime, to Russia.
When Griner informed Roberts that she struggled with feelings of remorse about everything, she said that she felt as if she had “let everybody down.”
However, ever since Griner has returned to the United States, he has been an advocate for those who are being held in a foreign country against their will. It is also the first kid that she and her wife, Cherelle, are expecting together.
In terms of her basketball career, she is still going strong in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), and she is getting ready to begin another season with the Phoenix Mercury later this month.
