The goal of the Aspinall Foundation, which was established by the naturalist Damian Aspinall, has been to release captive gorillas back into their natural habitat. Over the years, they have provided assistance to hundreds of apes, but there is one individual pair that sticks out from the others.
After raising them for fifteen years in Kent, England, Damian finally released a pair of Western lowland gorillas: Djalta and Bimms. They were released into the forests of Gabon, which is located in West Africa.
Tansy, Damian’s daughter, who grew up with the monkeys throughout her childhood, has not seen them in around twelve years, despite the fact that Damian has seen them multiple times after their release.
My sister Clary and I would often spend time playing on the grass with Djalta and Bims, and we would also sometimes go inside the cages with other gorillas from time to time. Tansy said, “I loved being around all of them, but those two guys were much more like our relatives to us than anyone else.”
She remarked, “The last time I saw them was when I was ten years old, and they were being crated up for the trip to the conservation site in Gabon.” That was the last time she had seen them.
It was thus two years ago that the animal expert made a request for his daughter to join him on one of his trips.
In the hopes that the gorillas would recognize Tansy, the father-daughter pair journeyed to the forests of the West African nation in order to make peace with the gorillas that did not belong to the family anymore.
“When we set out to find them again, I was a little apprehensive at first because I didn’t know if they would remember me after all that time or if they had become hardened by life and possibly dangerous,” Tansy said. “I didn’t know if they would make it through all of that time without remembering me.”
Unbelievably, something spectacular took place while they were waiting for Djalta and Bimms aboard a boat for a considerable amount of time till they emerged from the bush.
