While participating on a panel discussion at SXSW in Austin, Texas, the Duchess of Sussex discussed the incident in detail.

Meghan Markle is speaking up about the horrible treatment she received on social media, which she claims reached a boiling point during both of her pregnancies. She is using this opportunity to discuss the matter.

At the “Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen” discussion that took place on Friday at the 2024 SXSW Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas, the Duchess of Sussex, who is 42 years old, was one of the keynote speakers. During the discussion, she discussed the risks that are associated with using social media platforms.

Meghan, veteran journalist Katie Couric, actress Brooke Shields, and author-sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen were the members of the panel that were asked by moderator-journalist Errin Haines how they have dealt with the seemingly endless toxicity that has been directed at them on social media, which is a platform that appears to target and scrutinize women in an endless manner.

Taking into consideration that social media is a setting that encourages the expression of hatred, Meghan provided particular examples of instances in which she was subjected to the greatest hatred on social media.

“I keep my distance from it right now just for my own well-being,” Meghan said. “The majority of the bullying and abuse that I was experiencing on social media and online was when I was pregnant with Archie and Lili.” Meghan and Prince Harry are the parents of two children: a boy who is four years old and a daughter who is two years old.

The Duchess was perplexed by the notion that even a single person could have the courage to scream hatred.

“You just think about that and to really wrap your head around why people would be so hateful,” according to her. It’s not a snide thing. It is a harsh act. “And why would you do that, certainly, when you are pregnant with a newborn? As mothers, we are all aware that this is such a tender and sacred time.”

It was important to Meghan that she brought attention to the good influence that social media platforms can have, such as the panel discussion that was being broadcast live on YouTube. All of this is compounded by the fact that social media platforms incentivize users to create pages where they can churn out very, very inciting comments and conspiracy theories, which can have a tremendously negative effect on someone’s mental health [and] their physical safety. Meghan emphasized that social media platforms can be a cesspool for “hate and rhetoric,” and she brought this to everyone’s attention.

The debate on the hate that is being expressed on social media comes several weeks after Harry won a legal battle in court against a UK tabloid that was accused of hacking into his phone. As part of the settlement, Harry reached an agreement with Mirror Group Newspapers, which stipulated that the latter would pay a sum of money that was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

After a court ruled in December that Harry was the victim of phone hacking by the Mirror Group Newspapers, Harry made a commitment to continue his “mission” to keep the British media in check. This promise was made in the midst of the settlement.

Late in the year 2021, Meghan was also successful in her action against Associated Newspapers, which resulted in her receiving monetary damages as well as an apology from The Mail on Sunday on the front page.
